Mechanic Warning!! Ernie

Hi,

Ernie, usually recommended by Glen from Flying Squirrel who is highly reliable.

So this is how it happened, I was taking an exit from 401 express to DVP when my tire got a flat, on closer examination i found out that the tire burst from the air valve area, i had someone stop and help me fill up some air while my friend came to my rescue, i drove the bike off the highway and left it at Ernie's house which is at < REMOVED >. He wasn't at home, so i left him a message on the phone to replace by tire, do valve adjustments and Carb Sync. Long story short, he calls me after a week and tells me my bike isn't carb syncing, i go up and check it out and it is as he stated. I said him it was working fine when i left it at your place. He told me he will have a look at it. After 1 week calls me and tells me the bike seems to be working now, come and pick it up. I came by with my step father, got the bike, paid him 340$. It seemed normal when i started it except that the Rpms were high...i literally live 1.5 Km from his place so i drove back and found the RPMs wont go down easily and the bike stopped as soon as i reached home. I called him and he didnt pick up.

Next morning the bike wont start, i tried everything and it wont budge, finally i put the bike fuel tank lever on prime and it started. I sorta figured the vacuum isn't working, so i gave him a call and explained the situation, he told me to drop it off which i did the same day. After that i called him 9-12 times including texts for 2 weeks and the guy wont respond, finally ****** off i went to his place and asked him whats the matter, he says i cant figure out the issue, your carbs are giving problem, so there is no point of taking your call plus i am working on others bikes. I said they were fine when i dropped em off, what can be the issue, he says i don't know, you might need new carbs. Astonished i tell him can you put the bike back, ill take it to another mech for a second look, he says that's fine and gives me the bike 2 days later. I took it to Ted from Rosey Toes and told one of his guys the problem and he immediately knew the Mech has screwed up the carb houses and he fixed it in 20 minutes by putting them all back and then he carb synced it for me. Cost me 200$, i came back to him and told him how it was and told him to refund at least 50$-80$ so i get some of the cost covered. He tells me to my face, i worked more hours on your bike then i got paid for, i told him well you screwed it up to begin with so it aint my fault to which he replied i cant refund you anything. All in all a waste of a month of riding, money and bad service. Unless its a tire change, dont go there.

Why bother syncing carbs, it doens't do much. Unless the idle is totalllllly lumpy and out to lunch

edit: sorry that doesn't justify your experience though, not at all.

I don't totally understand the story because of the way it is typed, but I am assuming the high idle and lack of ability to synchronize the carbs was because the carbs were not seated properly in the carb boots, thus creating a vacuum leak? IS that what you are saying?

I'm trying to understand your post and feel bad about what happened to you and all, but did you have to post his address? Does he ever post it on the forum himself?

+1. The story is reasonable, but pull the poor guys address. If he works on bikes often, you have made it way to easy for thieves. Just put an area of the city instead.

Slightly out of sync carbs can still cause some bikes to stutter a bit under steady state throttle conditions ie. cruising at 5k rpms with the throttle cracked a hair. I find bikes with short strokes are especially sensitive to this (R6, ZX7 etc.)

That's why I like working on my own bikes. Saving myself alot of hassle & money

OP, I'm sure you have a point, but life is too short to wade thru your block of text.
Good luck to you.

I agree but "slightly" out of sync is so difficult to get nailed down with the common carb sync tool. You rev the engine and let it come down and the readings are off again.

as it turns out, ernie doesn't know much about cv carbs. to suggest that freak needed to buy new carbs is just theft plus charging him for screwing the bike up. the hoses weren't even close to being right, now i wonder about the valve adjustment. this was an easy fix.

Sorry for the late reply, i thought the post didnt go through or i would have certainly removed his address as advised by fellow members.

When he did the valve adjustments, he removed the Carbs and when putting them back he messed up the hoses which is why the crabs were acting up.

Works from home. I was really ****** when this happened, hence the outburst....its his lively hood....i shouldn't mess with it.

That's what i do but i figured the valve adjustments should be done by an expert as screwing it up would cost me big time. At the beginning of the season, i changed my sprockets, chain, jetted the carbs all by myself to save money. I thought since the bike has reached 40,000 Km, its about time it gets a valve adjustment and carb sync.
