Some very sad news:

I expect this is (another) generational thing, but I bought Cycle Canada for most of its magazine years, and Max's column was the first content I read. Not long after he left, I dropped my subscription.

I have read his books multiple times, as his writing had a "lilt" or sense of humor that not only resonated with me but brightened my day. His touring stories were the impetus for many memorable trips of my own.

I feel even more fortunate now to have met him one day last summer in front of the bakery in Havelock and being able to tell him how much I appreciated his work and the personality that came through in his words.

RIP Max.

Met him numerous times and have all of his bike books except The Winged Wheel Patch. Regret not buying that 40 years back.

He was the best bike writer I've ever read. When I read yesterday that he had died, there were three Burns books on my coffee table, and "around the bend (again)" was next to my bed.

So sad to hear of his death. A great talent that shall be missed.

He wrote on a number of topics.

I purchased "Cottage Water Systems" in 2004, great info and resource then and 20 years later.

The book "The Winged Wheel Patch" by Max Burns and Ken Messenger about Canada's military motorcycles and riders published By Vanwall Publishing of St. Catherines in 1993 is, in my view, the best history and account of that subject ever written. Messenger did all the research and interviewing of veteran DRs and I had the privilege of reading Ken's early draft. Ken got Max to come on board with him to help with turning it into a professional product which Vanwall took a chance on by producing (if I recall correctly) a 10,000 copy run, which eventually sold out.
