Mars mission one

I think it's an awesome idea and hope it moves forward....however, I'm doubtful of their ability to actually pull it off in such a short time frame, and I think they'll need more $ to do it.

As for a spot...nah I'd pass. I like earth.
 
I'm surprised that in the final 100 candidates there are so many older folks. Part of the mission would be colonization/reproduction.
 
8 months just to get there, 4 people in a tin can.

One would be an MD, all different races, I'd guess.
 
Call me skeptical. I think I've seen this with the initial planning of an around the world motorcycle expedition. When push came to shove, a lot of drop outs. I think some people really get a buzz from all the ramping up pomp/circumstance and attention. I hope I'm wrong again.
 
I didn't know about this, it's exciting. Whether this project succeeds or not I'm happy to see that human travel to Mars is being taken seriously. We'll get there some day.

Part of the mission, maybe, but not in the first stages. The reproductive drones can be sent later once a viable ground base has been established and is functioning without hiccups.
 
On the off chance this ever gets anywhere near launching people into space, it should be shut down. Being a long-term very expensive private enterprise, this is going to end one of two ways:

1) Foundation runs out of money, everyone on Mars dies after supplies stop coming

2) Foundation runs out of money, becomes a poorly planned financial burden on whatever governments step up to keep the "colonists" alive

Problem is, if we feed all the starving children and cure cancer, without some form of population control, we're going to need a second planet even sooner. Without population control, we're screwed.

this planet is plenty big
hell, Canada only has 33 million
we are the 2nd largest land mass

so we will go to Mars and repeat the same problem??

Personally, I don't believe we should halt progress or the pursuit of other things because humanity has some unresolved issues.

Quite possibly. Hopefully, by the time it gets to that state on Mars we'll have developed the technology to leave our solar system.

I don't get the fascination. If you want to live in an arid environment, with dust storms, and mountains go live in the Gobi desert, you won't even need an uncomfortable space suit. And if you want to spend 8 months getting there, but a camel, it's cheaper than a space ship. I guarantee all the candidates haven't seen everything that the earth has to offer, but want to jump ship to live (die) on a $#!thole like Mars...morons.
