Interesting thought. Maybe a DUI conviction should get you a decade in the military. You can be part of team human shield. When done you should have a new appreciation for life and freedom.

Good idea. If the purpose of our justice system is to rehabilitate, I doubt what marco munzzo went through did much rehabilitation. Neither does extensive jail time.
There's a thing called survivor's remorse or something similar. For a parent, not being there to protect your kid would weigh heavily on your mind.
I don't mean to blame the victim but in the real world one has to adjust for bad people. We lock doors and avoid risky locations. We also have to allow for bad drivers.
I would have been T-boned on the bike if I had believed in a traffic light.
Is it possible the driver of the Neville-Lake car was distracted by the presence of the little ones in the car, enjoying the smiles. Do we have to isolate the driver from the passengers.
Do we have to drive like professional chauffeurs. It's too easy to get involved in conversations. Of course there are passengers that say "Look at that sign over there".
A-holes like Muzzo take the enjoyment out of life.

It's easy to forget when you have tons of money to buy distractions. Muzzo should be reminded of his errors by spending a week or two in jail every year for the rest of his life.

If killing 3 kids doesn't "rehabilitate" someone.. no amount of time in any prison will.
My hope is that he is devastated by what he's done and will never consider recklessly endangering others again... that he will feel it for the rest of his life.. and may be do something with it.. become an advocate or something like that.
Of course.. may be he doesn't give a **** and is already DD'ing again.
Time will tell.

I know this might ruffle some feathers but hear me out.
Honest question because I have not been following this case closely and maybe someone who has can enlighten me.
One of the news articles I read that Muzzo has been given the longest sentence for a first time offender.
If so, has it been shown that he has a history of DUIs but just hasn't been caught/charged?
See a lot of talk about him not being remorseful and going to do it again? Also, has he or his family done anything charitable or tried to atone since the accident?

His early parole hearings didn't go well for him so did he later become more compassionate or did he learn to fake it better?
IIRC the billionaire family offered financial compensation to the Neville Lake family but it was refused. That is my recollection.
I'm sincere about the regular yearly stint in jail if you kill someone DUI. You never get to put it away.
Multiple offenders are not all that rare. What do you do to people that can't or won't change? Hang them or lock them up forever? They don't give a crap about rules, bans or laws.

The family sued for $25M, I believe Muzzo offered $15, so the settlement is probably in between. I can't imagine any settlement being suitable, I could not put a price on my kids. Maybe I'm old school, but the closest I could get to a settlement in a situation like this would be an eye for an eye and that still wouldn't be enough.
The Muzzo family are large patron donors to several hospitals, I believe they make donations over $5M/year. This is not new, nor is it related to the black sheep Marco Muzzo, the family have been philanthropic for a while.

He has a history of charges related to alcohol being dropped. Iirc previous ones that were known about were for drunk in public/causing a disturbance. I cant recall if previous DUI got dropped.
The family is not Marco and has long been philanthropic. If his Grandfather Marco was still alive, young Marco's world would probably have collapsed around him. As it is, it seems like the family kept him in his privileged state which I think was the wrong approach. F that guy. Let him survive on his own for a decade or two amd if he hasn't screwed up again, maybe think about bringing him back in.
As for longest sentence, yes it was and that is a problem with common law. You can only slowly move the bar even if it started 100 miles from where it should have been.

I don't know what I would do with the settlement money. Having a mansion paid for by the blood of your children would be an insult to their memories. Anything I bought would bring hollow enjoyment.
Helping another family would be an outlet. Not many perpetrators have the assets of the Muzzo family. If Dave the drunk killed the Neville-Lake family and all he owned was a beater van what would the N-L family get besides screwed by the insurance company.
Doesn't seem like a good idea to distance an organization from philanthropists based on the doings of one black sheep. The bad act is that of an individual, there doesn't appear to be a history of this in the family or their business. From what I gather, the family has a long history of supporting hospitals and charities in the GTA.
Why would any charity put their relationship and possible future donations at risk?
Don't get me wrong, I'll clearly state I'm no fan of this fellow - he's guilty of a heinous crime. That said, I don't see a reason to tar his family with the same brush, nor the need to make a statement that would jeopardize relationships and donations from that family and likely others.
I saw a video of that show and she came off as a real phony. Very 'class conscious' and frankly, detached from reality. I can't see her having any good judgement even if she had the desire to impart it on her loser son.
I do agree that if his grandfather was still alive, the situation would be much, much different at this point. Isn't that the way it often is though? One person builds an empire then generations who follow do their best to destroy it!
Reading the comments in that article and on here... and you can clearly tell how many are expressing rage without even knowing anything about the family nor the incident...
People commenting about his father making donations... or Marco getting off his private plane and into his Lambo before the crash... etc..
His father has been dead for some time. Marco Muzzo, the actual Marco Muzzo, was the grandfather.
The drunk driver is known as Michael.
The businesses are primarily owned/run by the uncles and other family... The drunk has been sort of sidelined for some time... before the crash... probably since his father passed.
it's also obvious that people are outraged more so because he is rich. No one is really talking about Brady Robinson.. not nearly as much as they are about Muzzo. Brady's incident was as bad or arguably worse and he received a longer sentence.. but he isn't rich.
You saw the same thing with the O'Leary boat crash... people were blaming her before they even knew what happened.. a lot wanted it to be Kevin that was operating the boat (even though it's usually Linda at the helm)... and even when the facts came out.. people were still trying to put it all on her. The courts cleared her.. but people still put it all on her... saying things like.. money talks, she got off because she's rich, cover up, etc...

From what I understand those "Charity" donations are huge tax write offs and are usually attached to backroom deals for contracts. I'd put my money on the muzzo business getting lucrative contracts worth much more then the donations...
