Mandatory Motorcycle Theft Alarms

For me, TDMM difference is ~$120/year between liability only and full insurance incl. comprehensive and theft. TDMM does require approved alarm installed to add liability and theft on SS bike. They did not check for "professional installation". I just called them and told them that I installed Scorpio alarm on my bike.

Here's the list of approved alarms.

1) Armed Guard
2) Auto Watch
3) Gorilla
4) Merlin
5) Sherlock
6) Scorpio
7) Viper
8. Phantom Max
9) Yamaha Cycle Lock
10) BMW
11) Global Tech GPS

Of those alarms they MUST HAVE 3 of the following 5 to qualify

1) Audible Alarm
2) Backup Battery
3) GPS Tracking
4) Immobilizer
5) Motion Detection

Once it's installed, give them a call to update your insurance with that information and that's it. I didn't have to fax in anything.

All the best.

Correct EXCEPT that all the alarms listed are approved. If your alarm is NOT listed, it requires three of the five features listed below.

Well, that means that a xena alarm disc lock would qualify then. That would be nice. It has an audible alarm, immobilizer, and motion detection.

How exactly does it immobilize your engine - i.e. stop it from starting? Do you replace your fuel pump with Xena when your bike is parked? Btw, you can confirm it with TD, but I was told that Xena is not an approved alarm.

Anyone been with TD Primum? The savings are quite impressive, but they require a theft / disabler alarm to be "professionally installed" and require proof. Anyone run into problems with this? What alarm systems do they accept and why can't you install yourself? What does the "proof" entail?
I was with them for over 10 years - very good insurance and can not be bit on car insurance.

For me the alarm was a requirement for theft coverage. My rate went up a bit once that coverage went on.

That makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Cost reduction was very minimal. Like I said, $8 or so per year. Might be because I'm part of an association that already has decent rates.

There is nothing saying the immobilizer has to be engine-related only. A disc lock, such as xena, immobilizes the bike pretty effectively. And arguably better than an engine immobilizer since the bike is immobile whether the engine on or off.

And the point is, by the earlier alarm requirements, xena does meet the ones discussed. Unless all the info is not posted, TD shouldn't be allowed to say one thing but do another.

They only would qualify me if it was one of those alarms AND had 3 of the 5 options. They would not apply comprehensive if it didn't match one of the alarm brands, or if it did match but did not have a minimum of those 3. Whatever the case, mine matches and has 4 of the 5.

Best of luck to the OP, call in to confirm but thats the info I was given.

Thanks for the info all. Made the switch and saved $2000 in total from Desjardin to TD MM. GSXR 1000 went from $1440 to $803 (full coverage). If you are a member of an alumni you will get these prices too. House, two sports cars, GSXR 1000 went from $5340 (Desjardin) to $3430

Switching my bike from State Farm, rates going from $1300 down to $600 for a GSXR 600
on a sidenote, anybody know where I can get a Gorilla alarm installed in the GTA for a reasonable rate?

I have 3 bikes with Primmum and only certain bikes need an alarm to be covered for fire and theft. It is high theft bikes, mostly SS bikes, that need the alarm. My VMax and DRZ didn't need an alarm for fire and theft but my Busa did.

Since when is it required?

When I signed up with TDMM, they asked me if I had an alarm or not, I said no, and they still gave me coverage...
I'm with primmum and I have no safety locks whatsoever ;)

Wow. People. It has been posted a billion times. It's not about "since when" and not about my bike or your bike. SS bikes and high-value bikes will require an alarm for full coverage with TD and its affiliates. Period. Done. (and yes, I know, someone will post half a page later than their bike didn't require an alarm).
