Managed to strip 2009 250r oil filter bolt and drain bolt - help!

Breaker bar to remove oil filter cover and the drain bolts??? Seriously?! What's next? Impact gun? OP most likely does not have proper tools to do this kind of job. Get proper set of sockets first if you want to change your oil again. OP, go get proper sockets, and while you are there (CT or wherever) get the kit for removing rounded-off bolts.

It's really hard to say how tight is tight without showing it. Try it with the torque wrench first (yes, they sell those at CT and other hardware stores too), then you will know how tight is tight. And yes, if you overtighten those bolts in the aluminum housing, you're pretty much screwed and will need to learn how to install helicoil inserts.

Usually a 17mm wrench is all you need. Hand tighten the bolt and move it a 1/4 turn and that should do it. No real need for a torque wrench.

As for the bolt -have you called Royal to see if they have one there?

and I'm sure you guys have never done an oil change on this model of bike...
I have, over a handful of times. Yes, you need a breaker bar if you have the bolt properly torqued to spec or trust me, you will waste a lot of time getting frustrated and swearing and smashing tools on the ground...
Yes, you need a torque wrench if you want to tighten it to spec and it also doubles as a breaker bar because it has a lot more leverage.

Except you shouldn't use a torque wrench to loosen bolts, if you value it's calibration.

i would not recommend s torque wrench. i just seem to get my self into trouble with the torque wrench....

to the OP.... tighten the bolt. when its tight then give it a half turn more with the wrench thats it.

You need a breaker bar for the drain bolt? Whats the torque spec 150 ft lbs?

BTW, stop giving advice immediately.

Seems to be a problem with these 250's. The bolts are always soooooo tight.
I did my oil change a few months ago. It was a pita to get those bolts off by hand with just a ratchet handle.

To get more torque and avoid stripping I extended the ratchet handle by slipping a long piece of pipe over it for better leverage and torque. Just get someone to hold your bike even if it is on stands.
Came off like butter.
