Major Dog Food Recall...if you have a doggie please read.

You know, I've never figured that out (the diet wasn't done as a cost saving measure, but as per the breeder's wishes/terms if I wanted her dogs).

However:

- 200lbs of dog-quality meat last me almost a month or so (given there are days the two oafs don't feel like eating, or I may give them a little less if I think they're getting fat), and costs me $100;
- veggies I "cheat" and buy in the frozen section of any supermarket (2 big bags run me about $8 and last almost 2 months based on the portions I mix in);
- A bin of kelp in the pet store is about $20, and it's used in minimal amounts (lasts a half year or so);
- Fish oils, again, about $10, and again, last about a half year (maybe a little less);

Given the above, and on some seriously rough math...probably costs me about $5 a day or so (give or take a few bucks) for both dogs (based on one month).

If you want to know what I spend on my dogs a day ... it's about $10 a day for 2 dogs. 100lbs Doberman, 75lbs pitbull/shepherd mix
I get crates of human grade meat (T -bone steaks, angus ribeye, pork ribs, whole chickens, salmon, etc.) plus some additional things most of us just walk by (chicken giblets, turkey necks, livers etc.)
I get all fresh veggies (pumpkin, turnip, berries, spinach, carrots etc.)
Plain Yogurt
Eggs
Brown Rice

All that sums up what my dogs eat.

I can see that given your list, yup.

P.S. I have two Great Danes - Harlequin male (150lbs) and Boston female (120lbs).

It's painful lol - but they are worth it. The doberman has some health issues I am trying to correct so I gotta pay somewhere.

Harlequins are gorgeous! My sister has a Dane. He's a large black male. Last time he weighed in was 197 lbs ... and he's only 1.5 years. I thought my doberman was large (and he is one of the biggest for his breeds) but he dwarfs my guy.

Well my dog was on orijen as a puppy to 6 months old...and holy crap that stuff was $$$...but for some reason has ended with stomach issues...switched to Costco and she been great...and it's saving me a lot of $$$ too...paying 1/2 the price...and getting a lot more...

yaya, I've done research as well...but since Costco been working for my dog...I'm not going to complain...and I also missed his recall :D

Some Kirkland food is on that recall list.

I am starting mine on acana and some dehydrated raw food mix soon. I had Costco puppy chow and while it's not on the recall list I want to feed something better to the dogs. Acana and Origen have the best food ratings. Origen is slightly higher is protein.

You know the best part, it's "claimed" (and I say claimed given I've never truly seen a medical study that supports the claims) that dogs on a raw diet live longer (my breeder's dogs are longer lived i.e. her Danes live upwards of 10 years or so).

Heh, Harlequins have their moments (here's my guy as a puppy, in 2006, with the breeder who was also his handler):

He is stunning! I use to have a dalmatian growing up. He was my childhood dog so since then, I have had a weakness for the white and black. What's your take on cropping the ears? I chose not to do it with my doberman. My brother in law wont even do it anymore at his clinic and their dane has his ears floppy. I admit, it looks really cool but I just couldn't justify the pain and healing process for something that's aesthetic.

Heronview is just up the road from me .. i ve been emailing the owner with info about a raw food diet.

Just drop by - Laurie is awesome, she will set you up. best to show up during weekdays - Thu or Fri just as they opened.
They also have facebook group which is pretty active. I cancelled my facebook account co can't give u the link

Thank you on the comment - Harls have the most high strung temperment of all the Dane colours (I had a brindle and a black before him, and they were so laid back...this guy was like a shizophrenic clown), so it was a bit of chore keeping him amused. Lol.

Ear cropping...well, to be honest, I like the aesthetics of it BUT, I'd prefer if they didn't do it given the whole cutting off 3/4 of the puppy's ear. Believe you me, it's a real b**ch having to keep up with the whole gauze and foam posts/tape swaps in the early days to get those ears to stand...talk about stress (because if you don't keep up with it, the ears inevitably droop and you run the risk of them never standing erect).

My one brindle and one black before these two had floppy ears; both my current dogs have cropped ears (my breeder prefers/insists to have them that way given "tradition" in the ring and "tradition" as boar hunters i.e. cropped ears were necessary in order to avoid being ripped by a boar's tusks) - cropping changes the whole look of the dog, to be honest (they look..."meaner" with them cropped).
