M1 Exit Test - Serpentine Ride - Cone Dimensions

Can someone confirm the spacing of the cones for the M1 exit test? The ministry's guide says two sets of cones 1 metre apart, with each set 4.5 metres apart. Can someone please confirm this - as people that have taken the test tell me the cone sets are actually around 12 feet (or 3.65 metres apart). I want to practice the test but need to verify the cone spacing.

Also, does anyone know when Learning Curves is doing their weekend M1 exit courses in the month of June?

Thanks to all for reading/responding!

It depends on the turn radius of the bike. 4.5 is standard but for big Harleys i saw the examiner moved the cones farther apart.

It might be based upon the engine size I'm not sure, I did the course at Humber which is different.

Learning Curves is holding it's weekend courses in June on the weekends. ;)

The Ministry uses guidelines, and in practice you may find some variations.

set the idle to a higher rpm and dont touch the throttle for the slow speed tests...simply tap the rear brakes to slow down for tight turns

Thanks to all for responses - practiced today in a parking lot with cones set-up as per ministry handbook and all went well. :)

I did my m1 exit at the ministry in brampton. They have the cone locations painted on the pavement. I just went up on a sunday when nobody was around and practiced. Everyone passed the day I went. The guy doing the test was great.

as long as you dont have a huge bike you shouldnt have any problems.

Hey dmode - my m1 exit will be in Brampton too - 59 First Gulf Blvd. If that is the same place you went and cone locations are on pavement, I may do what you did...thanks for the post!! Bike is a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 450cc.

Thats the place. If you were walking out the front door of the place it's the parking lot right there to your right. There are six sets of squares which will represent where the pylons will go. Stay on the outside of them for the slalom, down the center for the brake check. They will also get you out on the road for 1 block just to see how you signal and change lanes. Good luck!

Sorry make that to the left as you walk out the door.

Anyone do the M1 Exit test at Metro East (Vic Park and Lawrence)? Do you know if they painted the cones on the parking lot there?

Was in Brampton today and I passed by there (not with bike) to have a look. At the risk of being called anal, I measured the last set of "squares" to be just under the 1 metre apart criteria in the Ministry handbook (actually 0.89 m or 35 inches) with the last 2 sets of squares set approx. 4.2 metres apart (being 200mm or 8 inches less than the 4.5 metres stated in Ministry handbook).

FYI - I did not measure ALL of the 6 sets of squares.

Just in case anyone is wondering....thanks again to dmode.

Were you measuring from the inside of the squares? I think the cones sit inside which will give you a bit more space. Hey you could always rent out a vespa lx150, then you dont have to worry about shifting. I flew through those cones on the vespa in no time.

I measured to the opposing edges of the squares....

Vespa? With a Vespa you need to have a blindfold to do the test;)

thanx for the link

I will be taking my M1 exit course there at the end of the month.

I have been reading and a bit worried.
I have an 01 Harley Softail Deuce, it is quite a large bike (engine is 14500CC as well )

I did take the RTI course last Oct, and passed with flying colours, (really small bike though ) but due to lifes issues I was not able to get to ministry in time and it expired.

Didn't really want to spend the $$ to do it again so I am hoping to be able to pass the Ministry test.

I have been driving a fair bit this summer, both alone and in groups (1200 kms so far ) and even my anal co-riders figure I will do well and they have no problem riding with me (they are very picky when it comes to this)

I hope to get a half decent examiner that will understand this.
The bike has a fair bit of a rake and it seems the 21" front (with 17" rear ) tire makes it more difficult for those tight turns.

FYI - did the M1 exit today and all went well. Just wanted to thank all those who responded to my original question...very helpful!
Now 22 months of M2!!
