Lower speed limits within the city?

They're already slowing it down in the KW area.
Lots of main lines (aside from the expressway etc) have had speed limits reduced from 60 to 50 km/h, and, have had the stop light timings intentionally adjusted so traffic must stop and not flow smoothly.

pedestrians and cyclists have to be responsible to their actions as well. A lot of pedestrians and cyclists never follow signs and traffic lights but they never just ticketed.

I'm a rider, jogger, and driver.

As a driver, I notice the following things: ******** not using turn signals.
As a jogger, I notice the following things: ******** not using turn signals, ******** running stop signs.
As a rider, I notice the following things: ******** not using turn signals, ******** running stop signs, ******** trying to kill me at left turns.

Really? It's my fault when jogging that I need to yell "**** you" or kick the vehicle mid transit to get their attention? Nothing like a good workout when some idiot steps out of their car and DOESN'T say sorry for running a stop sign infront of my foot.

I feel safer as a jogger than a rider. People tend to step out of their vehicles when I provoke them, leading to either an apology, or primal instincts coming out (not yelling matches). As a rider, if you try to provoke anyone, they'll just straight up run you over.

EDIT: I'm surprised no one has mentioned BUS DRIVERS yet either.

EDITEDIT: Seriously, what the hell is up w/ the government and speed limits? Speed doesn't kill people just like bullets don't kill people, stupid untrained people kill people.

In Australia, the cars have the right of way. That's how it should be. This is all BS. 30kmph? How about ppl learn how to cross the street am ride their bikes

saw this on CP24 and IMHO i think this is actually going to turn into a "green" effort... not just to "aid in the health of pedestrians" but theyre most probably going to say " HEY! wont it be an amazing idea if no one drove cars anymore?" well all just ride bikes between 30-40km/h..... -__- why should you drive a car when you can easily choose a more physically active mode of transport.... however i can guarantee this will not happen... where will the pumps get they're money from? Everyone will be late for work adjusting to the new speed limits. Tickets will be shoved in our *** for the first week or so adjusting to the new limit. 1000000's of signs must be made and changed to display said limit.... the list goes on. i am 110% sure this will not last long even if they do go through with it.... just my 2 cents :)

forgot to mention... Better yet, they even had the most pathetic answer to "isn't this something that should be done as a case by case education to reduce such casualties?" by this they mean.... lets keep the limit the same and educate the dumb f**cks who dont know how or when to cross a street. Or the people driving without licenses or expired licenses or even have their licenses but don't know where the brake pedal is.... i am in total agreeance with this statement...more attention and education needs to be given for pedestrians, also drivers, i suggest MTO steps up their expectations when passing someone for their license. Its odd however that to this day in age people need to be taught how to cross a street, or drive a car.... its pathetic. They're doing everything in their power to avoid the problem (lower speed limits) but nothing to actually solve it... this city is hopeless...

Case in point, I took the TTC today instead of driving to work, and walking the last bit home I saw a guy, full stride, walk on a red directly in front of a car that was just starting it's right-hand turn. Had the driver not been paying attention he would have been hit. I should also note that the pedestrian never even noticed nor looked in the direction of the car AT ALL (was looking down at his ipod or phone) nor even paused for a millisecond before walking full-speed into an active intersection. Come to think of it, I maybe saw him look up once, maybe twice, the whole time he was crossing on the red, against the flow of traffic.

Side note, I also saw a girl carrying her dog so its feet wouldn't get wet. Sometimes I wonder about people...

"Elmer The Safety Elephant Says...Look Both Ways Before Crossing The Street!" That was 35 years ago.

Today, it's not unusual for a pedestrians to shoot me an angry look for not stopping fast enough...as they jaywalk from between parked cars or cross on a red light. Then it's back to daydream land with the cappuccino, smartphone, dog and baby stroller (not an exaggeration on one occasion).

Blinky, you are needed more than ever. Maybe the TPS could appropriate some funds from the 2012 Fatally Shooting The Mentally Ill budget and bring him out of retirement.

For the young people among us (the older yellow one was cooler): http://www.torontomike.com/2007/05/documenting_blinkys_history.html

This is stupid for several reasons. The most hilarious of which is the fact that they're assuming people are actually driving 40 km/h in 40 zones, and that the pedestrians and cyclists getting killed are being hit by drivers obeying current speed limits.

Derp.

One benefit to growing up under the cloak of Communism: They taught us to look both ways and proceed only when it's clear in addition to crossing only on green and/or at designated zebra's in [government-funded] kindergarten

This is not going far enough to prevent the carnage on our roads and sidewalks. We should also impose strict speed limits on pedestrians, so dumb f*c*s don't get concussions when they bump their empty heads into the lamp posts while walkxting (walking and texting). Jogging should become a misdemeanor.

If we invested one percent of money/time/energy currently wasted on prohibition, regulation and enforcement on education and prevention...

True. After more than a decade in Canada I am still flabbergasted on a daily basis by morons that cross the street diagonally, with their back against the traffic and their remaining view blocked by the hand holding the big-*** cell phone. They do provide a source of amusement when I sneak behind them and blow my 138db air horn :D. You should see the the high jumps and hear the rich vocabulary :lmao:

Guys,
The vast majority of roads in town are 60 km/h.
Any road unsigned for 60 km/h is 50 km/h (and school zones can be 40 km/h).

For example, Cawthra Road (in Mississauga) is 50 km/h for its entire length.
But you get guys going 70, 75, 80 clicks on it...
They come flying up behind me (who's doing ~60) like, wtf's wrong with you boy?
I believe many car drivers have serious awareness issues...

There is now a process where 60 km/h roads are being reduced to 50 km/h.
(ie. Kipling and Islington Avenues, south of Eglinton.)
This is to stop guys making kamikaze runs down to the subway @ 70 - 80 clicks.
Plus people don't stop for red lights anymore, and this is a huge factor!

When I'm cruising in-town on my Kawi (which will go ~225 or so, no problem) I don't want guys in giant Escalades etc. bombing all around me at 70 - 80 km/h, and not stopping for yellows...
You don't either.
I don't know what the solution is - I don't believe 30 km/h limits are the answer.
But you tell me... what's the solution?
More enforcement of the existing limits? Bingo.

Take care, ride safe, and watch your speed approaching intersections.
If the light goes yellow, you need to be able to STOP right away!
If you don't stop, you will be killed.
Regards

Solution is simple: Cops should stop pulling people over for going 200km/h on the highway (I am ****ing serious, because half of the time ppl do this, THERE ARE NO CARS AROUND). And start focusing on people who run reds (RIGHT TURNS), do not signal, don't stop at stop signs, or lane change without checking blind spot (I have kicked and punched two cars to get their attention due to blind spots), and idiots turning into the wrong lane.

But, this will NEVER happen, because even on these forums people think speed alone kills and speed is bad.

I'm still waiting to get a speeding ticket for going 50 on a bicycle in a 40 zone btw.

I think that downtown speed limit 30kph is not a bad option. Is there any reason to fly 50-60kph between two red lights on the King, or Bay?

Yeah, kill jaywalkers. <_<

That's why Cawthra has like a million speed traps.

Just watched another story on this. The statistic being flaunted is that pedestrians are more likely to survive a hit from a vehicle travelling at lower speeds. To me that says pedestrians tend to be more at fault when hit by a car. Since people can't learn how to cross the street safely, might as well force everyone to slow down so they have a better chance of living in case of a collision.
