Sarcasm an hyperbole are what make me say they do. I'm sure there are many people with loud pipes that wear full gear too. I was trying to make the point that the broad generalization made in the original post implies a connection between pipe volume and saftey gear, which isn't really logical. My method of pointing this out was to make a similar logical fallacy regarding a group to which I assume the OP belongs. My appologies if my douchery came across as genuine.

Probably because that ruins the enjoyment of riding, while loud pipes enhance it.

I'm a noob however I'm rocking an Akrapovic shorty on my 07 Gixxer and I can definitely see other motorists looking over when I'm coming up to them so they definitely know a bike is around and they don't switch lanes blindly - but as I said I'm a noob so what do I know.

At slow speed there is some merit to this viewpoint. You do need to consider though that the reaction to your presence may not be what you want. I had a '79 Honda CBX with 6 into 6 straight pipes. The thing sounded like a screaming banshee at anything above idle. When I came up on drivers I had a variety of reactions: driver looking to see what I was; driver tensing and wandering all over the road worried about the loud noise; driver wanting to kill me for making such a loud noise; and VERY occasionally not swerving into me (although I could as easily manage this by keeping my eyes open).

At any speed at all the sound doesn't reach their ears until you're alongside them and then it's too late anyways. You may notice that at speed you can't hear your engine noise. No one else in front of you or beside you can either.

I've had stock pipes (or reasonably sounding aftermarkets) since 1987 and would never go back. The annoyance factor was far too great.

Well my initial reaction was to respond as other ATGATTers have. But then I realized your point that the previous poster was stereotyping and I held off.

I agree that many folks that have ridiculously loud pipes are ATGATT. They don't necessarily correspond. When I had ridiculously loud pipes I was ATGATT.

Everyone here is of age, and is capable of making their own decisions. Why bother being judgemental about someone else's choice?

On the roads I ride like a sane person. On the track is where I take my risks, which in turn makes me a better, calmer more experienced rider on the streets.

I own both a pretty loud Ducati and a sewing maching quiet kawasaki. I find that there are far fewer close calls when I ride the Duc than when I ride the Kawi. Take that for what it is.

The Sig? lol, always been a friendly rivalry between the 2 flagship motorcycles in the "SpeedWars". Look at it as friendly jousting-Ty, FYI, I like the ZX-14, Had a GENI Busa, almost bought the ZX-14 instead, I was ****** off with Suzuki, but then in 2008 Suzuki came out with the GENII Hayabusa & made me happy.

Nobody has loud pipes because of "safety", everybody has loud pipes because it's the way motorcycles should be, you should hear the engine roar when you ride it, as opposed to it sounding like a freaken Toyota Corolla. If you want quiet, get a ****ing Corolla, and get off a motorcycle.

In my opinion any rider who riders sport / performance bikes and hates loud pipes is a pussy.

This^^^^ +1000, todays pipes are not even close to back in the day when they had like YOSH CYCLONE and a exhaust manufacturer call BASSANI i believe?, these guys made sick pipes, they resembled a flat black cannon and were insanely loud, they stop making for bikes, had one one a CB750 Sic!, heard they went into aircraft exhaust manufacturing-Ty

We could probably solve this with a simple invention - the loudest pipe of all! Design an exhaust system that projects sound roughly evenly over 360 degrees on a flat plane. It could actually have a noticable impact on traffic ahead, thus making things safer. It will also annoy about half of the owners to the point of removal, the other half suffering permanent major hearing damage.

I went sliding on the DVP with full gear and nothing saved my skin but my cheap armored Joe rocket mesh jacket, helmet and gloves. All had scratches that otherwise would have destroyed my elbows, palms and face. I was back on the bike as soon as I replaced my shifter and peg. As much as I would like to have a beanie helmet for the air while riding in the city, but from experience I know I shouldn't. Even with the modular helmet I always ride with it closed. I'd rather deal with sweat than loosing a month of riding because I was too lazy to be ATGATT.

However, I do notice people noticing me because of my loud pipes. They would be closing their windows or moving over.
