My dad was a carpenter and I could appreciate the skill sets.
Spent a fair bit of time myself on rooves pre uni.
Dad built his own house from scratch in the 30s- had $100 in the bank .... lived in it for at least 72 years…..still occupied now nearly 100 years later

Found this oddly relaxing to watch...hand tools with a minimum of modern materials
I like the limited dialogue ( really none)
3 years tho.....
Love the home built ladder.

I still recall when my first Makita drill arrived....the beginning of the power tool boom.....still running afaik.

Am I wrong in thinking that it's a cottage?

Thinking primary home. I suspect the planks were from trees from their property and ripped for them locally.

You should watch The Outsider and Sean James My Self Reliance on YouTube then...some amazing handiwork on both channels...and SJ doesn't use any power tools...SJ is also Canadian (somewhere around Algonquin I believe)...

The skills are still there but they tend to be more specialized. In the good old days one person could do plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing etc. Now it's illegal in many cases and impractical in others.

Home owner can do their own plumbing and electrical. It has to be inspected, proper permits, and up to code; but if they're capable.

You just can't have someone unlicensed doing electrical work for you.

Plumbing us even one of those grey areas.

I know a few unlicensed plumbers. They do good work, but can't pull permits.

Carpenters, and general contractors... not a mandatory licensed trade... which is b.s. I've done my schooling, and got my Red Seal, but many guys don't.

Fly-by-nighters make us all look bad.

Slap your name on a truck and start quoting jobs!...

Grandfather and father put up a cottage in the 50's. Father, brother and I put on a four bedroom addition later. It still isn't 100% finished - Needs siding finished.

Not sure if the firefighter crack is still true. I was in local 675 for a few years.
Jumped into computer programming later. Electrical isn't too difficult if you follow the code. Bad plumbing can make you lose your ****.
I find it weird here in Ottawa that so many tradesmen on jobs have Quebec plates. I didn't think we had between province trades.

Friend in our circle is a building inspector. If her stories are true , and I would expect yes , hiring a papered GC , project manager and union carpenters and plumbers is not a guarantee . Safer and better and you can get permits, but holy moly , some goofy stuff gets built .

Union workers -> higher wages -> more/better drugs.

Not saying all, but going by the number of friends that are/were licensed milrights (were=deceased) the sheer volume of coke and booze they ingested was jaw dropping.

Whoops!

Was supposed to say "fly-by-nighters", or unlicensed tradespeople, not firefighters.

Autocorrect strikes again!

I didn’t know that was still a thing. It used to be that to work in PQ you needed a triple C card. You couldn’t just cross the river from Ontario and work. However you could cross from PQ into Ontario. Needless to say Ontario contractor’s didn’t like it and I thought it had been resolved.

The CCC meant you couldn’t work commercially. You couldn’t even work on a rental property you owned.
