lost my only bloody key!!! 2 questions:

1) how easy to re-key Ninja 500?
2) In meantime, how easy to break lock so i can drive it? Thinking a screw driver would be best or.....?

thanks!

look on ebay, there are lot of lock chambers that go on sale.

how hard is it to break? i dont know.

Maybe you can take it to a lock smith and have him make a key. take the tank lock camber, those are easy to take off.

Any lock smith should be able to make a new key from your ignition.
Do not take the trunk or the gas cap lock you must use the ignition to make a new key the other parts use only half the tabs the ignition requires and the key made from the trunk or gas will not turn the ignition.

I just had this done for a friend last month

good luck

BUT BE CAREFUL, i was reading a post by brian636 and those screws are made to break off, that hold that igniiton thing in.

now that I think about it, I only have one key myself, can anywhere copy bike keys?

kawasaki is one of those bike that DOES use all tumblers in the gas tank lock. a lock smith can cut a key from it. its how i got one for mine when i lost it!

My Ninja 500 key has a number. I don't know if yours did, or if it's sufficient to recover the key, but if you have the number you could give it a try. At least you wouldn't have to rip parts off the bike.

Hmm thanks for the tip! What did you pay for your new key?

Next time I will make sure i have an extra key hehe what a pain

a kawi dealership should be able to replace it no problem, just give them the vin and show the ownership. bmw will do up to 10 keys, if you lose that many, youre retarded. but im not sure about kawi

tried the kawi dealer and they said they dont do that for some time now....which is wired...i used to get my key cut from bringing in the ownership and id to cycle word (back in the day when jesus was just a little baby)

stop the insanity!!!

ok... all you guys that only have ONE key!!!!!

.... go out right now and get a spare key cut!!!!! Please.

no for your problem, any mobile locksmith should be able to cut you a new key.

I had this problem with my Kawi EX500 too.

To "break into it" You need to remove the front cowling and such and get to the bottom of the igition switch. There should be two bolts on the bottom of it that the head is shorn so you will not be able to use an allan key to remove them. Drill the heads of these bolts. Remove the studs once you have removed the switch assembly. Keep the stud that is left so you can match up a new bolt for it.

Take the switch assembly to a locksmith. For about $100-ish bucks, they will cut you a new key. Get a spare while you are at it. If you want, hit up your Kawi dealership for a new key blank (or 2). Dundas Lock and Key does this service.

Assembly is the reverse. Not terribly complicated.

Use the ignition switch to make a key. As previously mentioned, Gas tanks and trunk's use half tumblers and often the key will not work in the ignition. Use the ignition switch and the whole bike will be keyed correctly. Even then sometimes things don't line up correctly. If you bring all the tumblers with you, they locksmith can work on it until they get the key to work in everything.

Kawasaki does not key based upon your VIN, so don't bother looking. Most motorcycle manufacturers for whatever reason do not do this. My guess is there is more money to be made selling you a new switch rather than just a key.

Good luck,

I've got a project bike I'm working on. I didn't have the keys. I spent $80 at a Yamaha dealer’s having a key cut using the code from the key cylinders. It worked, but only in the ignition, it wouldn’t turn in the seat/helmet lock. I was ready to drill that out and try to find another on eBay when I found this site. I sent a scan of my ownership and driver’s license, a couple of days and $30 later and I’ve got a new set of keys that work in all locks. Very highly recommended.

Too much work.
Just remove the top triple and take that to the locksmith... or just get the locksmith to come to the bike.
Alvin's Lock Service, they're in the book, does service calls for $90.

Kawi ignition have 6 tumblers, and the gas caps use only 5....So when they pic the gas cap and dissasemble it they get 5 out of 6 tumber codes they need, then they just start at the highest point for the last tumbler and work their way down untill they get the last tumbler level right...And then they have the key code and you have your new key....

A new Ignition for one of my ZX6R's with 2 keys and a key tag was $150 from Kawi, and oddly a full lock/key set including a new trunk lock and gas cap lock barrel is $350....Which to me does not make any sense to me...
