Looking to rent a motorcycle to do my M test

Hey everyone! I just got back from living overseas in Taiwan for 2 years and my M2 is going to expire in October. I don't have the money to buy a motorcycle right now but I need one to complete my M test before October. I've been riding safely for almost 5 years and traveled across many countries on bike. I'm looking to rent someone's bike just for the road test. Ideally it would be an easy to ride bike, like a Ninja 250. Willing to pay $100 or so for the trouble. Wouldn't be more than an hour I imagine. Please email me if interested! aajwani@me.com

Thank you.

I got a stabbing sensation behind my left eye while reading op. That's never happened before.

100 dollars isn't worth it.

You borrow my bike you borrow my insurance. That's the way it works.

not this again

Only the left one?

If your insurance isn't commercial you technically don't have any if you rent out the bike. In the event of an at-fault the person renting also owns your bank account, house, RRSP's etc.

Exactly. The second you take a penny in exchange for use of the bike your insurance is void.

I didn't say rent, I said borrow.

For the $100 he is going to pay me for gas it is not worth him to borrow my insurance.

Thanks guys tho-you really made my point.

This is why I offered a damage deposit. I was expecting interest from people with bikes that were something like $1500 in value, not your prized Triumph ridden by Steve McQueen. This is not that big a risk in my opinion. And I don't feel $100 just "covers gas," what an odd exaggeration. I also said "or so" implying that I'm negotiable. What a circle jerk.

Whether it's a "prized triumph" or a moped, if you injure yourself or another person, again - it's not worth it (unless you leave a million dollar "damage" deposit).

The "odd exaggeration" about $100 gas clearly went over your head also - it was an implied way around voiding your insurance by collecting money for renting... or did you just skim this entire thread?

Fair enough, I didn't consider the injury liability. Clearly there are some people who are able to "rent" or "lend" according to Craigslist or Kijiji, so maybe some people are able to facilitate that transaction, even if you can not. I do skim when people are just getting off being condescending on the internet. I didn't realise that was the point of being a part of a community, I naively assumed it was to actually help each other out and stuff.

The people on Craigslist or Kijiji who are "able" to rent or lend don't care about the risk to their insurance coverage. Either they don't fully understand the huge financial costs of a liability court case, or they think they are covered/can scam the company ("Oh no, it was a friend who borrowed my motorcycle, not rented; I swear!"). Help each other out is one thing, assuming a community ethos includes everyone is willing to take a massive financial/litigation risk is another. You've got to understand that a lot of people on GTAM take this seriously because they've seen the legal and financial aftermath of a liability claim that came out of (genuinely) lending a vehicle to a friend who subsequently got into an accident.

just for the record, insurance companies and the government as well see right through that sort of "maneuvering" to try to skirt the rules.

In the pilot world a non commercial pilot cannot accept money (not even gas money) to fly someone else around. People have been busted for it before, it used to be common for photographers (before drones) to offer to "help pay gas" to have someone fly them around for real estate photos, etc.

In the horse world one can't accept "money for gas" to haul someone else's horse around - same thing, people have had their policies cancelled for it.

Do it if you so choose, but you want to believe that if a an accident happpened the insurance companies are going to have their lawyers all over it like white on rice to avoid paying a dime.

If you're not covered under another auto policy (car or bike) - you may not have your own liability coverage.

Other than getting hurt yourself, liability would cover you for hurting someone else who may not have their auto policy or their injuries exceed that coverage. And for damages to other things, i.e. guard rails, light posts, etc. I think emergency services response may also be covered here.

So if you rent, I'd suggest thinking about your liability coverage, and what coverage the rental company provides. On the off chance something happens.

Either that, or I have a snaking suspicion a lot of them likely do not even have current insurance.
