Looking to borrow a dial indicator out Stratford way

I'm looking for any machinist types who might be willing loan me a dial indicator to measure valve/guide clearance. I'm in St Marys. Payment in beer?

A dial indicator for valve clearance? How does that even work? I have one, but it's not a Starrett or Mitutoyo or anything fancy. In KW

Not valve clearance but the "slop" between the valve and the guide. According to my manual I can have up to .003" in X or Y when the indicator is set to the valve and the valve pushed side to side.

KWDRZ thanks but I'm hoping I'll find one closer. But keep you in mind.

Ah ok. You will need a dial stand too of course for anything remotely accurate.

(we posted at the same time, just saw the pic :) )

Yes I need the stand too.

Depending on what's nearby, they valve stem could be the "stand" and the plunger pushes on something solid.

In a past life I might have gotten close by feel but that skill is probably gone by now. Havent used it in 20 years.

I believe you it could work just can't envision what you mean exactly how you could support the dial still

Well it depends on what fitting you have but think of the rod in your picture as the valve stem. Clamp the indicator to the stem, put the plunger against solid surface and wiggle. Depending on stem stickout, may require a smaller indicator.

Since you don't have a dial indicator, I am gonna assume you don't have a micrometer either.
Trying to measure slop in the guide is useless unless you know what diameter the valve stem is.
If the valve stems are in spec, lube the guide and stem with the thickest oil you have and when you put the valve in the guide it shouldn't wobble. If you can wiggle the valve in the guide with 30W oil on it, it's too loose.
If you're gonna screw around with trying to fix bikes having a dial indicator is a handy thing.
I have never seen anyone measure valve guide clearance with a dial indicator or set-up gauge. You would use a hole gauge or a pin set. Do you have a good set of drills? If you had a micrometer you could use the dull end of a drill as a pin gauge.

I don't have a micrometer just a set of vernier calipers. The dial indicator set up is right out of the Haynes/Clymer manual for this bike (not sure which one I have).
The oil test sounds plausible.
Thanks

I have the Princess Auto dial indicator and the base. Combo is $55 (plus tax) but cheaper when on sale. Is it as good as the big dollar ones, obviously not. BUT, lets put it this way, it is more than good enough to do this job, it just takes a little more care when setting it up and using compared to the expensive ones.

Mine gets used all the time in the shop.

I have dial indicator, dial plunger indicator, vernier, bore gauges and micrometers. I'm in Freelton but you can borrow any one of them or all of them if you want to pick up. Send me a PM
Thanks BB if it wasn't crazy times that would be a great excuse for a ride but I'm trying to stay home or close to it for a while. I'll let you know in a month if I haven't snagged something close.
