Looking for some new friends!!

Haha never did I say I was out to ride only as a fashion statement, and I do board on the slopes! I simply mentioned that its one aspect I am not a fan of....never did it stop me from riding because of it being a fashion statement, just a simple dislike.....not every part of everything we do is all positive, I simply stated one of my personal negatives! I think you read waaaay to far into a simple comment.

Jenn

With all due respect, Jenn..riding a bike can be many things; it can fill many voids, open doors of realizations and appreciations you never dreamed possible, leave you challenged, rewarded, scared at times and invigorated at other times. Yes, it can open doors to new friends also. One thing it should NEVER be, is some sort of fashion statement. It's been done to death already...and too often..literally. If this is why you're riding, you'd be better off learning to ski and hit the slopes...it's a whole lot safer and cheaper to boot..

I wish for you that helmet hair will always be the very least of your concerns regarding riding.
All the best,

ne ol' sobriquet

...just a simple dislike.....Jenn

If you dislike it so much then why are you riding? Maybe you should just stop and stick to the slopes. Riding isn't for everyone and other people who love it so much will not appreciate someone who dislikes it so much out riding all the time..............

Is that what you mean by reading to much into a comment? Find a ride you want to join, join it, if you like the people then get their numbers to ride with them again, if you dont like them then don't ride with them again. People are different on the computer than they are in person so go meet up with a group and check it out.

Mmmm.. no ... no... you're thinking about a different kind of head.

Mmmm Helmet Head... *daydreams* That would take quite a bit of talent i be thinkin lol

Wow is it becoming hostile in here! Too much testosterone, and too few women in this community...

Jenn, best way to meet *decent* riders is to join a few group rides - just make sure that the ride is appropriate for your skill level, and if you find yourself with a group that is a bit too much for you then don't ever feel the need to keep up, and don't hesitate to leave early if uncomfortable. (Just let the leader know you're leaving so they don't worry)

Weather permitting I'll be joining 7up's ride on Sunday - he is a great leader to learn from, and I strongly recommend his rides to all new riders. For details see the following thread under the Weekly/Regional rides section:

Jenn

Maybe I did.
"not every part of everything we do is all positive"
- true, as for riding, some of my dislikes that are not easily addressed and some are practically impossible are - wind noise. I hate ear plugs but use them cuz I hate deafness more - another is heat..some bikes are too damn hot to ride when the temps get up to 30+, but all bikes have compromises that have to be weighed - and another is the difficulty to shade the sun from your eyes behind the helmet shield, even the few that are on the market, don't work anywhere as well as they do in a car it seems. And of course there is always that huge bug splat, right where you try to focus your vision, 30 seconds after just stopping to clean the shield...but what're ya gonna do? Take the good with the bad..

Have a safe season, Jenn.

This is good advice, but not easy to execute because often the time a rider might be feeling pressured to keep up, (or is getting a bit stressed over some less than great passing or lane-activity by other riders in the group) is during the ride between stops. A good leader will stop at every turn to ensure the slowest is caught up with the rest, but some take off again once they get their head-count, so the slower rider is once again tailing the group and pressured because it is human nature to not want to stand out or feel like they are infringing on the groups ride, all because they can't get the message to the leader that they are gonna split from the group.

I have lead the odd group, and at the start of the ride I let everyone know some of the dynamics of the ride when it comes to turns and ensuring everyone is together. I won't go into all my practices, but a key one I do (if we realize there have been some stragglers by 30 seconds to a couple minutes or more each turn) is indicate my turn to the ones at the front of the pack and move over in my lane to indicate they pass me but turn in the direction my signal was directing. They make the turn and pull onto the shoulder well up from the corner so cages don't get flustered or rubber-necking in the area. I then pull over on the shoulder and wait on the main road so the slower riders can see where we turned. I will pop the shield and ask if everything is cool and then they have opportunities (more than just one) to say they think they are gonna split off on their own if they want. Or if the group are regulars and I know that all of them are still content to slow the pace 20% or more and not be bothered by it, then we might do that so we can still stay all together. This is the best scenario since having a new rider want to split in usually unfamiliar territory and maybe 200 clicks from home is not a very viable option either IMO. Obviously way better than a new rider crashing, but not a very sociable option in all the other regards. I have also handed over lead to another of the front runners and then lead the slower ones at a comfy pace for them so they aren't stressed out and then hook up with the rest at lunch or a predetermined break later. (my favs are lake side spots where there are often parking lots, picnic tables, washrooms and a good breeze blowing off the lake to keep the bugs on the move). Usually we aren't much slower than 10 or 15 minutes later anyway. Then no one's adrenaline gets stifled and no ones confidence gets too stressed. Win win for everyone.

KawasakiGirl - Sent you a PM.

someone start up a ride up already, today's weather is unbeatable.
i would, but am new to toronto and don't know any good routes yet :)

Ummm guys if you wana pick up a chick just go to a local starbucks and pose. You will have a chick ask you something about bikes by the time you finish your coffee and you can take it from there. Just do it solo as most ladies will get intimidated by more then one rider and the chances that you will get approached is less likely. If your cockey enough and can take rejections and want a more aggressive approach just sit next to the lonely girl with her laptop and make some small talk. This has only worked 2/5 times for me since they may actually be doing a report and don't want to be bothered or their full of themselves . . . ;P This is how I met my ex and will also be how I meet the next ;P Good luck all and welcome to the forums Jenn.

This is very interesting, not that this whole thread is not, because it definately is lol. i'm a curious mind, so i always wondered why does this work, i mean the difference between bikes and cars is enormous, chicks just dig bikes tenfold more then cars. I was always curious to see how guys pick up girls using bikes, and have seen it work, however, i never thought of doing that myself, because i think i have ADD and can't chill for too long in one place before getting the aggitation to go rip around on the bike.lol

I gotta say though, i don't know if its the bike im riding or what i've done to it, but im positive no girl is casually walking up to me to ask me about my bike, the only people who have actually done that are guys, and they always are going ape **** over my bike (its a supermoto i modified into a supermoto streetfighter stunt bike), you name it, while at a stop light, while moving, kids taking pictures, girls with boyfriends in cars just staring back in a very slutty manner, and at times im actually afraid to go to a starbucks to pose, because almost everytime there are more then a handful of girls "Eye Raping My Soul" I should be proud, but i've experienced this many times, and its really scary, and uncomfortable, i guess because guys have this image of chicks being innocent and weak and stuff, not scary manly horny eye raping mode....i even had this at a gas station from a 2 up chick rider whos boyfriend i assume was filling up the gas in their bike, which i might add was worth hella of a lot more then my crap.lol ... i guess im trying to ask, what does it mean when girls eye rape you, and im talking about a hard cold stare not even flinching, and just looking at you as if you've got your dick hangin out your pants the wrong way or something?

I'll be straight up, im the type of guy who puts 2000kms on a bike in a month, but the biggest pet peeve about riding i have is, my hair gets ****ed up bad, not that i would have cared if i had a messy hair style, i have a very sleek blow dry hair style... the problem is i use my bike as a daily transportation, and sometimes going to work or a night out, i get one lift, meaning i can take my helmet off one time then back on after which my hair gets completely ironed.lol and that is annoying, like a night out looking slick as **** neck below to toe, cuz apparently my hair is ****ed up.lol

This is why, most of the time i "Stig it" never take my helmet off when i do stop, unless for long periods of time. Try getting a nice looking cap that has a velcro lift, i tie mine to my belt strap. I usually don't care, but sometimes, after several hours riding through the day and walking into a trendy place the hat comes handy, also for guys i find wig or scull caps help alot more then not keeping a hair styled in place for two to three times taking off and putting helmet back on.

I'd be very interested in group rides and meets as I am new to the riding scene as well! I cant get enough of my new bike!

I want to join the leg humping but my wife's name is Jenn and she rides my Kawi, so leg humping you is like leg humping my wife which seem less exciting to me somehow.
