looking for a used tow vehicle

any experience with the hyundai tucson or ford escape?
My girl has been driving an 05 Escape for a while now, she loves it.
Aside from the control arm bushings and brake hoses, she didn't do anything else to it since she bought it.

Anything Hyundai is great now a days.

Not when those parts are buried inside the transmission case. Most automotive CVTs are not serviceable. When (not if) it breaks, throw it in the scrap heap and buy a new one. Having said that, a lot of front drive auto transaxles have the same situation.

Careful with Subarus in the 4-5K range. Alot of them have headgasket issues that can get very costly. There is a reason why the value drops significantly from 1999 - 2003. That being said, I have an 03 forester that serves well as a tow vehicle. My main complaint is the road noise caused by the frameless windows.

Although not exciting, a rust free Honda CRV would be a good chocie.

A new long block from Subaru will set you back $2000 for your forester. Find one that needs a head gasket and swap it.

Very strange I would have thought the new ones would be more spacious. I can bring everything I need for a race weekend with an 01-07 generation.

I don't understand why you woukd have to remove the fairings?? Windshield maybe.

The newer models do seem to have smaller door openings from what I can tell. When I got mine I measured out a bunch of different models, new and used, and found the 99-04 Odyssey had the tallest hatch opening.

And yeah, I can fit a bike, spare tires, stands, tool box, track gear in my van without trying and still have room for two passengers. If I needed to fit a cooler and genny (small ones) I could probably figure it out. As long as it's not being driven off road, a minivan is far superior to a pickup in every way. Can pick up 6 wenches at a time!

Wife has a 2006 Santa Fe 3.5 with 70,000 km on it. We bought it in August 2012 with ~16,000 km on it. It is a nice vehicle but really really thirsty (14L/100km average). We've had one brake caliper seize and the A/C compressor is on its way out (big $$ repair soon). Personally, knowing what I know now, I wouldn't buy that generation of 3.5L as it just uses way too much fuel.

so i began my search for a used car today by going to this place... http://wwwb.autotrader.ca/a/Subaru/...5_17277627_20120516111500846/?showcpo=ShowCPO

The salesman was being an *** from the start, even during our initial conversation on the phone. Didn'treally explain much about the car other than its "beautiful", friend and i drive over to the dealership and to examine the car's exterior, pop the hood etc etc...car looked fine given its age. I then proceed to ask for a test drive, and he proceeds to discuss $. Okay sure I understand. First thing out of his mouth, he tells me that the safety and etest isn't included (which I knew beforehand from reading the ad), and I tell him, I'm bringing in my own trusted mechanic to get a second look at the car, and will decide what to do about the etest at a later time (perhaps when I'm closer to purchasing the vehicle). At that point, I could sense some disappointment and hesitation by the fact that I wasn't gonna eat the safety/e-test fees he had laid out.

He refused to offer a test drive, until I brought my mechanic. I then explained my mechanic has a day job and isn't gonna wait around for me to make a decision, he's basically going to be my second pair of eyes -in and out-, that and I knew he was busy tonight and not able to make it out, so why don't you just let me test drive your $6000 beater car? In any case, we got into a bit of an argument and I asked him one last time...do you want my business?...He said no in a really rude manner. My friend and I promptly left in my car, which happened to be nicer than any car in his lot by far.

Behavior like this makes me think a salesman has something to hide. I understand there are many tire kickers out there, but it's not as if I'm asking to drive an exotic sports car, its a 10 year old SUV for christ sakes. Perhaps I did something wrong or gave him the wrong vibe. I don't doubt its hard being a used car salesman, but must be even tougher to be one when you're an ******

In any case, I've revised my list of vehicles and my budget, upping it to as much as $8k, cars on the list:
- Scobby Outback, Forester x/xt 04-08
- Hyundai Santa Fe 07+
- Ford Escape 05+
- Nissan Xterra MY?

Iv owned 3 xterras and a pathfinder. they have all been amazing and I beat the scrap out of my vehicles.
they tow my track car and all the equipment and tools.
take them off road here and there.

the only thing to look at is the engine.

my 2000 xterra sold at 337,000km with nothing wrong or repairied
my 2002 sold at 250,000km in mint shape
my 2005 is at 180,000 and feels like new

the options are up until 2005
3.3l and 3.3l supercharged.

the base 3.3l is under powered for pulling anything more then a couple of bikes and is very heavy on gas.
210 tq and 160hp

the supercharged version has 210hp and a bit more tq it is ok power wise but nasty on fuel.

the 2005 and up has the 4.0l engine. 285hp it is a bored and stroked 350z engine.
it is way better on fuel then my old 3.3s and feels great on the highway, I normaly left lane drive with traffic at about 140.

there is a tone of room inside and out, amazing off road and in the snow, the roof racks are great for stuff aswell.

Insurance is great. Im paying $100 month for full coverage, my 98 crv was costing me 147 for liability only.

Like I said, Iv had 3 xterras and they are GREAT trucks and classy enough to take a lady out to dinner with.
