Long Distance Riding - Seat Comfort Suggestions?

The short story on this is that getting the seat right can be a very expensive exercise in trial and error. There are aftermarket seats (Corbin, Saddlemen, Mustang, Sargent etc.) and there are companies that will custom rebuild your seat (Russell Day Long, Bill Mayer, Rick Mayer, etc). Another route, as mentioned, are pads such as Airhawk, the beaded seatcovers, and sheepskin.

The best thing you can do is get up close and personal with whatever forums exist that are particular to your bike and see what other people have to say about their seats. Take all that with a grain of salt, and give something a try. The good news is that most aftermarket seats are a step in the right direction, and that if they don't work the resale on them is pretty good, if you put them up on eBay.

When I rode cruisers, I liked the Mustang seats. On my V-Stroms, I went with Sargent. I tried a Sargent on my FZ1, and it was awful, so I got all spendy and went to Bill Mayer, and had a seat custom built for me. IMHO, it was worth every penny.

This kind of stuff can get expensive, so you might want to consider if it's worth it for you. Considering the miles I put on my bikes, a seat upgrade is something I would do right away if the stock didn't work for me.

I hear good things about beaded seat covers, and its probably the cheapest route too.

Padded bicycle shorts, beaded seat covers and Gold Bond powder.

Beadrider is really a pleasant surprise and as mentioned cheap.

Instead of padded bicycle shorts there are armored shorts for similar price point with compression and they have padding as part of the armor.

They are very comfie and work well under light riding pants - add the Beadrider and you are under $100 for a some protection and comfort.

I was skeptical but it works

I currently use alaskan sheep pad but would like to try beads too. What is the difference between regualr and ultimate one?

I bought the ultimate as it's ceramic and I take it back and forth to Australia which has a strict policy on all things made of wood and it's so damp there I figured the ceramic was a better bet.

Ah, got it - thanks!

Sargent seat here works well. but still use sheep skin on top of that. There are lots of ways to help improve comfort and it all depends on you.

I have corbin on mine - great seat but still use sheepskin on top. Looks very old fart but I don't care - it is comfy!

Compression undies, Gold Bond medicated powder.

Sheepskin when it is cold.

AirHawk (#1) or Beads (#2) when hot.

I'd buy a used seat on ebay or Kijij and pull the staples out of the vinyl and cut a patch of foam out of the bottom and fill it with whatever might work for you. I've seen Gel pads for this purpose on line. Once I get looking I found a gel pad for wheelchair use and figured thats got to be pretty good. Another option is to insert some memory foam in the space. You can buy it in varoius stiffness. When you find what works, staple the cover back on and your off.

Any suggestions for added comfort for the long rides .. Pressure points getting sore at approx 200 kms

Which points? I ride 7-800 km a day and all I have to do is move around in the seat from time to time. At stops I clench a little to move the blood around.
You must have a very bad seat.

I rode to San Diego and back a few years ago (via Deal's Gap - ie. a SCENIC route)...

Stopped for gas, and at or about 1/2 tank to stretch...

And every once in awhile stood in the pegs as cruising down the interstates...

Raised some eyebrows, but I made good time and had some fun on the twisty portions (seated)... ;)

This was on my Katana 750 - but planning to do the same again on my ZX14 this summer...
