License plate was stolen

Last night some *ss stole my niece's license plate off of her bike. She was parked at the mall (for no more then 10 min) and in that time someone stole her plate and the plate off of the bike beside her's. Does anyone have any suggestions on securing the plate on a bike so that it's harder, if not impossible, for a low-life thief to steal it?
Thanks

Brafasco will have anti theft bolts, probably more than one type.

Don't forget to report the theft to the Ministry of transportation, the police and the 407 people as soon as possible.

^^This is priority, if not already done. Stolen plates are used to steal bikes. Also a dab of blue loc-tite or even red if she's keeping the bike for a long, long time. Also I wonder if zip-ties would deter someone? He has a wrench or a socket, are there odds he has a knife it something to cut it with?

What connects on the back of the bolt? Not a regular nut I hope?

The holes for my system are blind, but i see your point.
There are 2 part anti theft nuts / bolts also, but you can use the ones pictured above, mount the nut and then crush the exposed threads left sticking out so the nut won't come off until you cut it.
Keep in mind, the thief is looking for an easy plate to steal, just having those will deter most.

here's google images of anti theft bolts http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q...source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Kxq9T7XCLOuA6QGiisAh

Aren't stolen plates replaced free?

I wouldn't exactly go out of my way trying to secure them against theft... it will likely not happen again.

I don't think there's a higher or lower chance of getting your plate stolen twice, unless its at a location you frequent. Rivets would be best. Now that you mention it I might replace those cable ties I've been using...

You wish... You have to pay for a new plate and possibly the stickers as well. Plates got stolen off my car a few years back and it cost me.

I thought I remembered someone I know going to the mto with a police report and getting plates replaced free of charge.

Could be mistaken though I guess!

If you report it police, you get a piece of paper from them. Take that to the ministry and pay $18? New plate (different number) and they also
Give you a new sticker

Oshawa Centre. Luckily she was thinking and did call the cops as soon as she saw the plate gone. The cop told her that this has been happening alot over the last few weeks. The thing that really burns me about this, is that she had just picked up her plates approx. 3 hours prior to this happening, so now she has to take the time to go to the police station and pick up the report and then go get new plates which will cost her not only money but all this extra time.

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions.

Pity no one saw them? I guess easy for theif to have helmet in hand and pretend its their bike. People wouldn't give a second look at them.

Sounds like the thieves are getting ready for stealing other bikes. Whats the bet the thieves are based out that way.. and then go shopping in Toronto at the Condos..

This happened to me after the Highway of Heroes Ride so I figure I'll share my ***** of an experience thus far.

I took pictures of my bike after the Highway of Heroes ride, but just before leaving the waterfront. The pics show my plate still on my bike. After leaving, I stopped off for some food on Queen St. and I'm pretty sure that's where my plate was stolen. Rode home not noticing the plate was gone, parked in the garage and noticed the missing plate a week later.

407 ETR
The lousy part is that I noticed the missing plate one week later, so any 407 charges in that week will be billed to me. And the 407, in true customer service fashion, won't register the plate as stolen until I provide them a police report (not just a report number) which is $5 and can take up to 30-days to get (you have to fill out an "FOI" form at the police department... FOI = Freedom of Information). Their excuse? "That way nobody can call the 407 and register a plate as stolen"... Which isn't much of an argument since I should be the only one with access to my account, and my plate is registered to my account... 407 is run by idiots. I did however convince them to re-run the plate with the MTO and when they do, they'll see that it's stolen.

Police
I needed to file a report with the police but without a vehicle, I had no way of getting to the station to file a report. They had an office call me to take my statement. I visited the station the following day and filled out the documents to get a copy of the report to provide the 407. The officers in attendance were not surprised at how much bulls#!t I have to go through to make the 407 Gods happy.

Ministry of Transportation
While at the police station, the attendant behind the desk filled out the MTO form and handed it to me. With the form, I went to the MTO office for a new plate ($20... NOT free). I didn't have to re-pay registration since I'm currently registered until my birthday. You will need this form, your ownership (which was in my motorcycle jacket which I tend not to wear while driving a vehicle), and your insurance (or company / policy #). I didn't have a copy of the ownership, so I had them re-print it ($10... cheaper than heading home to get it, and waiting in line again). So now I have a new plate but nothing to mount it too. When the a**hats stole my plate, they ripped it off the mounts and broke the mounts.

New mounting
The lost riding time, $35 cost, 407 headache, half-a-day off of work bulls#!t isn't worth it! I'm going to have a get a new mount made for the plate, so it's going to be much more difficult to steal. Not impossible, but enough of a deterrent.

:) my plate got so damage from my old cruiser that the top holes for screws are broken, so its being held by the bottom screws which most bikes don't have, that = deterrent from stealling my plates :)
