Police do not enforce those rules. The HTA applies, and the HTA does not mention a NEED for signal lights on a motorcycle. This is also why you have to learn hand signals, because there are some motorcycles which from the factory do not come with turn signals.

Source: I own a bike which is road legal and has no signals.

Correct but if you equip a vehicle and use it then it has to meet the requirements.

All the integrated tail light signals I saw in action were pure garbage.
I will never understand the obsession of getting rid of turn signals on a sports bike...

Has anyone ever received a ticket for having a brake light modulator (that wasn't asking for it)? Even the moto cops have them installed on their bikes (though they're technically exempt from that section of the HTA).

Hell, according to the HTA, it's illegal to use red lights as turn signals (which is how many cars come equipped from the factory).

Intermittent red light restricted
(14) Subject to subsections (14.1) and (15), no person shall use a lamp, other than the vehicular hazard warning signal lamps commonly known as four way flashers, that produces intermittent flashes of red light. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 62 (14); 2007, c. 13, s. 17 (1).

When dealing with a stock setup you can have a conflict in which the hazard lights and signal lights are the same units; both red. With a stock setup, you have a valid argument. If it's not stock then you are left to argue it on your own, without benefit of supporting information from the Federal Government.

In the spirit of full disclosure my own motorcycle has aftermarket red turn signals, on the Givi saddlebags, but I'm very unlikely to have any issues as the provide greater, rather than lesser visibility and are actually also wired to my hazard light switch, in the stock configuration.

No, it has to meet these requirements:

The regulations you linked at Transport Canada's standards, which only apply to importing or distributing vehicles in canada. The Ontario Safety Standards and the HTA are the requirements that apply to drivers on Ontario highways.

When I was pulled over and eventually charged with "Operation Of an Unsafe Vehicle" MTO cited CMVSS as the guidlines that my plates were pulled. OPP issued the ticket under the HTA so yes you are correct.

Wow I never dreamed I would get this kind of response to my question!

Thanks for all of this guys, because of your comments and the fact that I am a new rider who doesn't want to get hassled by cops or get hit by asian drivers...I'm going to go with a traditional eliminator at the back of the tail that still has the signals (albeit smaller nicer rizona signals).

Thanks again guys!

I was thinking of drilling a hole under the existing hole on my plates (pic for reference). My question is, Is it illegal?

The actual wording of the regulations precludes the 'alteration or defacing' of a number plate. While it wouldn't necessarily be in the spirit of the law for an officer to charge you with defacing a plate for poking more holes in it, it would still fall within the letter of the law. Also you do not own the number plate. It is the property of The Crown and must be returned, upon demand.

Thank you Rob.
