license plate frame to fit Ontario plate

Still using my first car plate that I ever got. Supposedly if they start peeling and you catch it early enough you can get a free replacement. Pretty sure using an unreadable plate is even more likely to get you pulled over than using a cover although based on what I see on the road neither are enforced at all.

Any sign making place should be able to cut a custom one for you. Our engraver at work could do it but the materials we have aren't UV stable. They go white within a couple years of being outside. Been thinking of making a couple if I knew a good coating I could spray it with that would prevent that.

Sadly (and stupidly), that is illegal. You may beat it in court as the intent was not malicious (assuming you made a plate with a number that you were legally entitled to use), but you are still setting yourself up for the ticket. I wanted to refinish my rusty plate (sandblast and repaint with original colours) and technically that is worthy of a charge for defacing government property (HTA 12(1)a).

Section 14(1) allows police to seize plates they believe to be altered or not authorized for that vehicle. If you make a plate from scratch, does that get you around that section? You haven't altered it and the number is authorized for that vehicle, but technically the plate you have was not issued by the government so it is not their property to seize. It would be interesting to see how it turned out in court.

You'd lose.

I believe he was referring to making a couple of plate frames, not the actual license plates.

Ah, yup, I think you are correct.

The upside to the custom frame is you could make it large enough to expose the entire plate and own the only legal plate frame in the province.

Yes. I would not modify a plate. Maybe touching it up a bit which is illegal but will likely never get you charged unless you repainted the whole thing.

And yes, as mentioned plate frames are also technically illegal but considering how common they are I highly doubt a frame will give you issues as long as it's not obstructing the plate. A plate cover, maybe, but even then I'd be surprised.

I got one that fits in Port Dover. A guy down here in the U.S. had one made out of rectangular reflectors that seems neat.
