Left turn lights!

great info.. thanks.

So you suggest doing a u-turn then?

You won't get any suggestions from me... but we could start the debate about what's safer... making a left turn through a red light, or pulling a u-turn near an intersection. We'll probably get an even split out of the GTAM crowd, and likely some comments about snitches getting stitches.

For my situation the lights were cycling normally for every direction but mine, I waited a full cycle as the oncoming lanes got the green/advanced green twice before I ran the red. If I were to turn right I would have ended up at a very busy intersection where I could not have done a U turn safely. So from reading that then I was well within my right to do what I did, good to know. :)

I used to have this problem every night on Spadina, close to lakeshore. I would wait for about 5 minutes, and the left turn light would NEVER change. SO i would go ahead and make the left turn when it was safe. I got pulled over for this once (TPS "Stealther") and the officer was actually pretty nice once i explained the situation. He actually made me recreate the situation, and sure enough the light never lit green. No warning no nothing, just "Oh your right, its not working properly. Have a good night"

Usually when I'm waiting to turn left and I see a car behind me, I move forward a bit just so the car can get to the sensor. What if there is absolutely noone else waiting with you at the intersection, would it still be an interference if you leave the bike to press the Ped-X button or is it one of those things that will be subjected to the cops discretion.

Nothing in the highway traffic act that exempts you... You may win it in court ( if you can prove that the traffic signals are defective), but you can still get the ticket.

Id if say hitting the pedestrian walk button is a great idea... Thought of that myself a couple of times.

Yes its legit.

Just have to practice care due and attention. Make your come to a full and complete stop where your supposed to. Wait for light to turn. If light never turns (id give it 2 min) then proceed with caution. The light could be defective.

If there is traffic I usually just turn right. Then left on a side street. U turn and out.

I was told this fri evening by an off duty opp officer.

that being said id still be hesitant to do so on main roads.

That's a malfunctioning traffic light. You treat it as a four-way stop. Pretty clearly covered in driver's ed.

A malfunction is a malfunction; if all 4 directions were stuck red, what then?

Like I said before, from what I can see there's nothing in the HTA that says anything about malfunctioning traffic lights. Legally you don't even need to stop... The closest I can find is that you are required to yield the right of way right of way at an uncontrolled intersection. Look up 135(1) BTW, Driver's ED teaches you what you SHOULD do.. not was it required by law.

such a huge number of accidents occur at left turns, one wonders why we just don't make all lights timed with left turn arrows.

Wouldn't you know it? My town has five intersections with lights, one of them makes me wait forever to turn left. I just wait a reasonable time, then turn. Gotta be careful though, Opp roll through town once a day or so...

It's all good. Talked to "Ernie" down at the county administration office today, he said "Bill" will check it out next week...
Gotta love small towns!

Forgot about the o.regs, just referring to 144(18)...

But it is what it appears it to be unless u had a reasonable way to prove it, it could become also reasonable in appearance, for a PASSING motorist, that you were also circumventing the light (by stopping, becoming impatient, and going through) . If ur stopped, and If the light works for everyone else, afterwards too, it becomes a court date, and then trying to win it in court. Not worth the headache, IMO.

I've set ats signals off with a bicycle, and my 650 lb motorcycle.

I have a couple near me and it's easy to tell no trigger. The walk light will turn red then flip back to white...then I just go through as if it was a stop sign.

I think they fixed the worst one on Eglinton and Ridgeway but Burnamthorpe and Loyalist is still hopeless and you often can't get cagers to move close enough to trigger it.

Yet the one on HWY 25 and a popular bicycle road works perfectly for bicycles and motorcycles....it can be set properly ...they often are not. I think that one actually shows bicycles where to stop to trigger the lights.

Another small town guy here. The one set of lights to leave town I have to turn left on (easiest way. Could take sideroads but they're in terrible condition). Light never works for me. Been running reds.

The new left-arrow turn lanes on Hwy 7 in Richmond Hill don't detect my bike (760lb HD). I was lucky enough that on the next cycle, some cars pulled into the opposing left turn lane and triggered the arrow on the next cycle. Don't turn left here regularly, so not sure if I'll bother to call this in. The few other times I've experienced this elsewhere I just waited a reasonable time, made sure it was clear/safe, and drove through.

I'm on the same street all the time and haven't had an issue in years. Bicycles are supposed to be able to trigger those things. Stop on the 3 circles. I had some issues a few years ago but after calling 311 they adjusted them.
