Largish Generators

Diesel is way too loud for a home generator unless you both live far away from people and sleep like a log

They have made huge gains in this area, my current diesel is 58 db , 10 ft away you can hardly hear it. But its not an inexpensive unit. It exceeds the national parks rv limits with flying colors.
They make them for the entertain industry so concert gear is powered up and you dont hear the drone of the genset.
I use one in my boat and you can watch a dvd unencumbered, the constant vibration throb is a different story.

National park spec is 60db at 50 ft (roughly 74db at 10 ft).

Are you sure your diesel is 58 db at 10 ft? Normal speech at 3ft is 60db..

You have to make sure if you are wiring it into your house to get a transfer switch that also switches the Neutral. A generator above 5kVA will certainly be neutral bonded. If the neutral is not switched then you basically end up with two neutrals and can still back feed to the grid. In the US where there is no CSA certification it's acceptable to break the neutral bonding for permanent installations like backup power, the instructions come with the transfer swithches that do not transfer the neutral.

If you get a smaller generator with Neutral Floating this info does not pertain to those generators.

I would just make sure to wire it correctly, Transfer switch that also transfers the neutral, leave the neutral in the genset undisturbed (CSA cert. not voided). I'd look at something like a Honda EU6500, they are a quiet invertor series generator, that would be my number 1 choice.

The DCA-150USJ2C ultra silent generator is the next generation of WhisperWatt generators with a patented soundproof housing with even lower noise levels and features an upgraded environmental package with an integrated fuel tank and fluid containment system. The generator, which has a sound level of 63dBA full load at 23 feet,

Diesel Generator - 37 kW Single / 3 Phase, Isuzu Tier IV Diesel engine, sound level: 58 dB @ 23 ft. Available for online purchase with free shipping, ...

There are lots of them out there, I said mine was 58db and 10ft away you can hardly hear it, not 58 @ 10ft. altho with the critical area refitted muffler added it may be. We have also added louvered intake that reduces noise whistle and a flex fan that stops whistle. The marine installs are lake cooled so they get quieter with no rad fan.

they dont need to rev like a gas engine so its a different drone sound.

direct injection, and higher pressure pumps have taken the clatter out of modern diesel, like a VW car.
My primary plant in the current boat is an Onan (cummins) and was about 64db before enclosure mods, it has water cooling that mixes into the exhaust for discharge (closed loop system) which brings it down to 58. I spend a fair amount of time generator projects these days, the industry has moved leaps and bounds in the last three years. Its not a dream anymore.
