Laptops

When I bought my E485 SSDs were still an option i.e. it came with an HDD. It was significantly cheaper to put in an SSD myself. That said for future proofing might as well make sure you're getting 16GB of RAM because it's cheap.

I'm a little annoyed the E485 didn't make the cutoff for Windows 11 support (it can run it fine but it whines constantly about it having an unsupported CPU)

I'm going to be the jackass to throw out a useless Apple recommendation, you can pick up a refurb 15" Macbook Air for $1500 plus tax. Apple refurb is essentially brand new, with full warranty, in a plain box.

The Air will give you actual portability, amazing battery life (easily 10+ hours), great keyboard and trackpad, decent screen, and all the other perks that go along with Apple products.

I use a brand new mid-level Dell for work and want to throw it against the wall anytime I'm using it in laptop mode.

I'm normally anti apple anything.

Except for the MacBook air.

When you know, you know....

From the sounds of what you use it for, any laptop over 500 dollars should provide you with what you require.
Look for sales, Amazon, Best Buy, Costco etc.

My last one ( the despicable 17”er) was $1899.00 down to 1248.00 and I paid $698.00 out the door at Best Buy . Who knows what this thing should have cost lol.

I'm quite happy with Asus products. Anything current with $700 - $1000 price range should be good for use case. Might want to go with 16 gigs RAM if possible.

That's exactly the laptop I have now. Was $700 on sale at BB.

Either of these any good? One's thinner and that's about all I know about differences.

Nice big fast hard drive. Everything else looks ok ish. I would seriously do on online chat with the big manufacturers and say “I’m thinking of getting an XXXX from HP for $YY but before I do is there something you have that can blow that deal out the water?”

Nearly every laptop I’ve bought has been at an unadvertised (lower) price via the direct online merchant. The only exception to that was my Mac but I got education pricing on that.

Try Lenovo and Dell. Lenovo definitely did move. I asked for a quote and got a decent one. Dell might be a bit stricter but if you try a local agent (university sales etc) then they will have lower pricing.

looks solid to me!

Just found myself a Surface Pro5 used for $180. Considering that my SP3 has done good for 5 years…I’m hoping it extends that streak.

Still highly recommend that line.
