The landlord operates out of St Catherines -- not exactly an expensive or demand market so it's not likely a rent control thing.

Before they extended Go service into the Falls, maybe. There was someone on FB Marketplace renting out their shed for $1,000 in St. Catharines a few months ago.

The plot thickens. Did your GF take the landlord to the LTB with a $12,000 claim for a $180.00 deferred maintenance item? If so, I can see whay he would be ******.

That is why, for a renter, the best advice is to NOT let it get to that point. Once you are at tribunals and hearings the relationship is so broken the renter is screwed. Does not matter that they won and how right the renter is, they are screwed. It is not like they can have their mom phone the landlords mom to get things sorted out....

Think of it like an employee employer relationship where some tribunal decided that a fired employee gets their job back. Some giant company, maybe in some cases it works out but the manager will be holding a grudge, it is not personnel for the company at large, you are just some number. If you are working for a small to medium business it is not going to work out well (rainbows and unicorns) for the employee.

Remember the Klingon proverb, "Revenge is a dish best served cold."

Even if the LTB says she is right, she will lose in the long run, see above.... LTB is NOT the landlords mom. They can comply and still screw her over.

Oscar Wilde on the quote but totally agree that it's better to pick the fight than let the fight pick you. Time to do some shopping for a new rental.

A person can always keep their job, residence etc but often not their sanity. With the job they get the stinky tasks and bad reviews. With the apartment they're last on the fix-it list.

Yes it is actually an Oscar Wilde quote but in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.... Khan Noonien Singh quotes it as a Klingon Proverb....

So obviously Wilde stole it from the Klingons...

No the 12k was for rent reduction for almost a year...

She went through three flooding issues but only one massive major one that affected everything. Kasey didn't give her a dime..

The massive flooding happened due to the 4 students he put upstairs. Every single tenant complained about them but it wasnt until the bed bugs that he finally kicked them out. But the bed bugs started after the t6 was filed.

They busted the toilet somehow, was ******** and pooping in the bath tub but eventually the toilet problem got worse. **** and poop water all over her apartment. ? And he claims her father didnt want the contractors over to fix this mess in the video

After the T6, Kasey was forced to do all this and more....
- finish repairs in both bedrooms (fix the holes, water damage etc)
- forced to spend the big $$$ to fix the pipe in the laundry room
- fix the broken stove
- fix the bug nets
- brand new kitchen cabinets, sink and faucet
- brand new washroom cabinets, sink and faucet
- fixed the fridge

Unfortunately, he was supposed to be done by Jan but there are a few things still not done. I dont think he cares though because he already got hit with a fine from the bylaw officer for being late. I believe maximum of $100,000.00

Since losing at the LTB,

He deliberately cancelled bed bug treatment a few times. Those upstairs tenants brought bed bugs around October and he didn't properly bring in pest control until it spread throughout the entire apartment building. By April 2020 he finally couldnt blame individual tenants and was forced to kick everybody out for 10 hours. Also he finally kicked the students out from upstairs around this time. But he brought in new student tenants who supposedly burned down their kitchen at a different apartment he owns....
Paid contractors who were working in her unit to take pictures and, call bylaw to give her parking tickets
Refused to take out the parking portion from the rent. Then he would send out a N4, but refuse to accept the payment for parking. He has done this a few times
The youtube video
Got her father involved to try and piss him off. So when he does, he can call the police and kick them out of the apartment. He did this to another tenant and the guy went to jail and the girlfriend was left homeless ?

So in his head. Because my girlfriend was paying below market rate rent, she shouldnt complain living in a **** hole. Now it is hospitable again, he is trying to do everything possible to evict her so he can jack up the rent.

Obviously girlfriend and I tried to reason with the dude. Simple Request, fix the apartment as promised, stop the parking drama and leave her alone.

nOPEE so...

Opened a case with the rental enforcment housing unit... They tried to contact him for a few weeks and we asked multiple times to call them. Nope... Last I heard he is looking at another (max) $100,000.00 fine

He didn't stop this behaviour so she was forced to open another LTB case. It was set for this month and it was supposed to resolve the remaining maintenance issues and stop him from harrasing and threatening my girlfriend...

The 12,000 was chump change compared to what he had to put into fixing the unit...

Stop paying rent, no evictions during covid and the LTB will be backlogged. Non payment of rent does not affect credit history. You will heave pay it in the end but you can make the landlord sweat for a while. This isn't good advice... but if you guys really want to **** with him look in to it.

Noo. Kasey would probably beat her or slash her car tires

Dude is crazy and unprofessional

Did Kasey make any threats or in any way make you GF feel unsafe?
Ya but he knows how to do it legally.

The picture taking, youtube videos, ranting text messages. Indirect methods?

Anyway the police said it is a civil matter and take it up with the LTB

And of course there's no way for your gf to prove this.

I've dealt with scum like this before. You need to fight fire with fire; give them hope, smash that hope, and do it repeatedly until they are completely mentally broken (exactly what he's doing to your gf.) But I understand that most people are kind and don't have it in them to do this so all I can say is I'm sorry to hear this.

Stop paying the rent and start looking for a new place. The mental anguish alone would be enough to make me walk away from that type of ********.

as a former landlord it’s ridiculous to me to do this to tenants in your properties. I miss being one and will probably return to it again in the future but this guy deserves all the **** you can throw at him.

Bad advice. If you don't pay your rent there is a good chance it could be reported to a credit bureau. It may not impact your Equifax or Transunion credit score unless the landlord if big however small landlords share payment histories on industry specific specific credit bureaus. Rest assured your rental application will be tossed in the fire if you're delinquent -- makes it hard to find a decent place in a demand market where the landlord has multiple tenants looking for a unit. This hurts you in the long run because you're out of luck for fair deals, leaving you with the option of higher rents or slumlords.

Is the lower rent worth the mental anguish? Just move on... seems like you both are deadlocked in a we can't get the other person win. In these cases, I say let the other person win. You will win by living a happier place.

What goes around comes around. If the LL is as bad as you say he will end up with loser tenants that will mess up the building. All it takes is one or two human cockroaches to infest the place.

I don't have a program. Which one is the Leach and which one is the Lamprey?

Absolutely untrue for Ontario. Landlord can do a soft credit check that's it. Rent payment can not be reported to credit bureaus. In the US it's different, and I don't know about other provinces.
