That's what I did in our last house. Blank plates over intercom and phone jacks (80's house). Looked nicer. Wires are still there if somebody really wants to use them. I left things like the wall mount phone jack sitting in the utility room.
You can yank that thing. If you have dsl the filter should be installed at the incoming junction box. One side to the house network, the other to a jack for your modem.
