Does it block Covid-19? Might want to leave it on, just in case.

It's an inline DSL filter

You leave the strange world of the early 2000s

It prevents interference from a phone line if you are using DSL Internet.

If you don't use DSL internet, or never plan to in the future, you can remove it and just replace it with a regular jack.

However if it's not there on the line and you use DSL or do at some point in the future, if you pickup that handset it will knock your modem offline.

Each handset in the house on a POTS system needs one of those if you're using DSL.

That thing is ancient tech. You can pick up new plug 'n play inline filters for $10-15 now.

Sure, but it's probably functionally identical to one of the new ones. And that's one designed for a wall mounted phones. ISP's give the filters away for free when you signup, but the wall mounted ones are not typically amongst the options...so these are actually worth keeping if you have one.

Thanks. Just trying to make the house look more attractive to buyers. I'll paint it white.

Good solution. But if you're not using DSL currently, just take it off - you'll probably find a standard chrome (or at least perhaps better looking) regular jack behind it. Push up on it and it should pop off the existing jack.

Of course...if you ARE using DSL and actually have a phone on that jack...well, yeah..paint it white LOL.

When was the last time you saw a wall mounted phone?

Been in a boomer house recently?

Very much still a thing. ;)

I and all my friends are boomers. Few of us (maybe none) have landlines any more, let alone wall mounted phones.

Plug your phone in to charge it? Luddites.

Presuming you're talking about wireless charging instead.

My phone has it...but I rarely use it....it's so painfully slow compared to a good wired connection, especially a good wired fast charger connection.

While a cable should always be faster, fast wireless chargers now are 10W. This is close to the standard usb charging power. Appropriately paired phone/cable/fast charger can hit 25 watts. Personally, I try to avoid charging that fast. I have also had bad luck with failing usb jacks on the last many phones. My wifes S8+ usb port actually caught fire while charging (no obvious reason why, most likely incidental moisture in port?). Since then, she is obviously wireless charging only.
