Instead of OpenOffice, get her LibreOffice. It's similar, but with bug fixes, code cleanup and compatibility tweaks. Works faster, doesn't eat up system resources and can handle m$ office documents better. As I mentioned before, most of OpenOffice developers abandoned ship and went over to Libre due to mismanagement of OpenOffice by the main corporate sponsor. That means all of the new development will go to Libre, along with the rest of the corporate sponsors.
