Helping a student do assignments. She needs a laptop with "word".She only has about $200.Anybody got something for her?

Just an m$ Office licence will set her back a few bucks. Have her try LibreOffice. It can open and save doc/docx/xls/xlsx files and same goes for powerpoint. Free and legal. Also make sure the lappy has a genuine Windows install and either recovery discs or the OS install disc.. As a student I'm sure she'll fubar her system, most likely by hitting sites she shouldn't go to or opening content she shouldn't open, so she'll need that. Otherwise, some easy Linux distro, such as Ubuntu or Mint is a must. If that's the case, make sure she has an HP or Brother printer as they have excellent Linux support. HP is better as it's pure plug and play. Brother involves a bit of tinkering.

You can get a new netbook for that does that work?

+1 for that .. or a nice year old netbook with MS preloaded is even better. Kijiji is the king when it comes to that ..

PLUS as a student, she should be able to get Office for next to nothing. I know that we have a deal the full program for $10 downloaded to our computers.

Ok...what's the diff between a netbook,a notebook and a laptop.My head hurts!

Netbook has a 10" screen and no CD or DVD drive
Laptop and notebook are the same thing, larger screen 14-20" and have a CD/DVD drive.

I'd go for a laptop so she has a usable screen and keyboard, especially for word processing. Something usable can be picked up off Kijiji sellers in the $150 range (asking). I was looking for even cheaper stuff ($100 tops), mostly to run a low power footprint server, with a built-in UPS (battery :D) at home, but since it won't even be running a GUI, I can get away with 1GHz/1GB.

lol...OP doesn't know the difference between a netbook and a notebook, and you drop GUI, GHz and GB :)

...and he also complained his head hurts after hearing the difference between laptop, netbook and notebook, lol

Get an IBM thinkpad T40, T41 or any T4X series. It will blow any netbook away. They are slim, and quite resistant because they have a magnesium shell. Their screen at 1400x1050 puts newer widescreen laptops to shame. Word editing and websurfing is better with a tall screen. Dunno why the industry went to widescreen. It can play flash, HDmovies and just about anything you throw at it. You can grab a used one for less than $200.

OPS, I can't remember for sure but some or all the T40 dont have wifi G. Most if not all the T41s do.

Found a used laptop place that has their pricing pegged at normal market values.. www.buylaptops.ca I just got myself an older T23 with a RAM upgrade for $100 tax-in so I'm a happy camper. I don't recommend that for modern Internet content or for storage space. I love T60's even though they're a bit tiny for me, but T4x series might not be a bad idea at all. Won't hurt to give those guys a buzz.

Thanks for all the advice guys.I was ready to buy her a new laptop, but a refurb as you peeps pointed out is the best way to go.A guy at my work helped me out in the end.Set her up with a Dell D620 and an all in one HP printer for $175.She will be very happy!
