So I was looking around today for possible candidates for a first bike and I came across a Kymco bike, the Quannon 150. Costs about $4200 (new). Anyone own it/thoughts on Kymco stuff?

Kymco is better known for their scooters which are good reliable machines. They have decent dealership support. The Quannon looks like a CBR 125 copy.

I have a KYMCO Venox, their 250cc cruiser. I'm at 28k km and it's awesome. I've taken it to Montreal, Port Dover, you name it. The Venox just outclasses all of the other 250 cc cruisers offered in Canada. It's a Honda Magna 250. KYMCO does the engine on BMW's 450 enduro bike, they share a facility with Kawasaki, they started off making stuff for Honda. Good stuff and 2 year warranty comes standard. I believe they also do some Arctic Cat ATVs (?)

I had a chance to ride the Quannon itself and then throw a leg over my girlfriend's CBR-125R to compare. We have a blog post about it scheduled to publish later today. I'll post the link when it's up.

Long story short the girlfriend decided it wasn't worth upgrading from the CBR-125R she already had to the Quannon, but for anyone looking for a first machine it's a great alternative that fits more like a full-size bike.

You'd be better off with a CBR125 or 250, or a Ninja 250. Better resale, tested, more after-market support, reliable brands, similar price.
Better yet, get a used bike for 2G.

You can get a used beginner bike for 2G?

Yeah see I came to that conclusion too, but I was also told that a CBR 125 is too small for me, and that I'd be better off starting on the Quannon 150 or a Ninja 250.

search up cbr 125 on kijiji or craigslist. You could easily buy one for $2000.

Getting a 125 for $4200....wow! Don't even think about it. You'll get sick of this bike in 1 month and lose a bunch of money trying to sell it

I don't care what anyone says. Do not buy a 125. You'll live to regret it trust me

See I follow your logic but I have two issues with that. 1) I need a forgiving bike/something to learn on. 2) Honda CBR 125's are (like posted above) only 2G-3G 3) Anything above 250cc will cause my insurance to go through the roof.

the price is a bit high for a 150cc but that's saying how highly Kymco believes their product is and not just some crappy namebrand though most haven't heard of Kymco.

I've rode my Kymco scooter across Canada up the Rocky mountain with over 100k kilometers and still no major problems. I even came in 2nd place in the trailer hauling competition losing only to a Shadow 600. Paul remembers that lol.

Kymco is well known for their ATV's and have been in business for close if not more than 50 years. I can have confidence in their parts distribution in Mississauga when I was in Victoria, B.C. Took 3 days for the parts to arrive! Every e-mail inquiry I have they answer promptly and specifically within a day or 2.

The distributor also runs a flagship retail store so you're going through less red tape.

Oh yeah Kymco has the fastest stocked 50cc in the Super 9 going at 80 km/h so just imagine how fast a Kymco motorcycle will be at 150cc.

Is it worth the $4200 for a beginner bike though? Or should I just get a 125r and be done with it for the my first season?

for my first season I would get a cheap bike that I wouldn't be afriad of dropping and cringing. So a cbr125 makes more sense. Cbr125 also has better resale value and easier to sell after your first season. You would be hard pressed to find anyone wanting to buy a Quannon for even $3000 used.

Hell I tried selling my scooter for $1700 even though it would cost more than $5000 new with all the accessories and best offer I got was $1200. So I shipped it to Calgary where I'm using it as my daily work commuter. I had an easier time selling the Suzuki GN125 motorcycle lol.

Agreed, plus there are more 125r's in supply.

Also, if I'm 6' 4", will I fit on a CBR 125? I've heard that it isn't built for tall people.

not many bikes are built for above average height people. unless you want a dual sport. so just get used to it.

I sold my girlfriends 07 cbr125r for 1700 bucks, it had 12k on it and ran like a dream. there are tons on kijiji

dont pay 4 gs for a new beginner bike, you wont keep it.

you can test ride the CBR125. Honda does a touring with their bikes around Ontario so check their schedule. They'll let you test ride more than one bike if available so you can even try out the bigger CC bikes to see if that suits you. Last year I test rode the CBR125 for half an hour because the ride leader was unfamiliar with Toronto's road and got lost lol. I'm a short guy at 5'3" but had to lean quite a bit on it which hurt my back even after 20 minutes so I didn't like it. I'm more a standard sit upright type of rider.
