KTM Camshaft Issues

It's about time.

"The overall quality and integrity of the camshaft is not the problem." Really?

its not just the 790's that have unanswered issues. The RC390 has a history of over heating - for years..

fix this properly ktm, this is your reputation at stake. Invaluable.

The 790 is built somewhere other than Austria. I wonder why Triumph is doing the same but not having the same sort of issues?

In any case, yeah I know of some 390s grenading at the track too.

It is a bit disappointing watching them play ostrich with the issues. Apparently the 2nd gen 390s are pretty reliable

A far cry from aprilia replacing all engines on the 660 models because of some potential defects

Still, wont deter me from buying another KTM at some point again in the future

I'm coming up on my 60,000km maintenance on my 2nd Model Year (1st MY in NA, 2019) 790 Duke. I'll update when it gets done. I don't suspect any problems with the bike. We'll see when its opened up.

The 30,000km was done by Adrian at Ace Moto Tech. Nothing was reported when that was done, but I didn't tell him to look at it specifically.

Looks like lifetime goodwill warranty. KTM goodwill scheme will cover the costs of camshaft repairs

If you do your own oil changes, watch out: “As with all repairs, a full manufacturer service history is a requirement, but in this instance, we are supporting those who don’t have a perfect service history as well – we just ask that if it has been done externally that there is evidence and receipts, and we will do with such on a case-by-case basis.”

prediction: one "missed" oil change (due to DIY and no record of it, even if it was actually done) = no warranty.

Saw a video that someone took of the engine cranking with the valve cover off. Oil just piddles out of the squirter-jets that are meant to squirt oil at the cam lobe and dribbles straight down, never actually making it to the cam lobe. I'm sure at higher revs and with the engine warmed up, it would be fine, but those cam lobes are going to be spinning dry on cold start. Don't use oil thicker than manufacturer specs IMO.

Camshaft lobs surface failures have been an ongoing issue on several brands over the years and in several cases, it is not the lack of lubrication supply but in the manufacture of the camshaft where the lobe surface hardening process or the cam followers has not been done correctly.

I remember doing the update on my old GPZ900R which involved adding an oil line.
