Korean Food... Recommended Dishes For A First Timer...

My Wife and I are going out this Saturday night and we are going to check out the Owl Of Miverva in Uptown Waterloo. We enjoy spicy food and are open to trying out pretty much anything. Are there any "staple" dishes that we should check out (like Pad Thai for Thai Food or Chicken Marsala for Indian)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. :)

I would recommend Pork Bone soup if you like spicy. If you want something dry, try Bibimbap which is rice with veggies and some meat. These restaurants will also give you many complimentary side dishes as starters.

Thanks for the tips. :)

I should mention that we are going with another couple so we could split some dishes (which we do when we go with others for Indian food; 4-5 dishes to share and some to take home).

I am checking out online reviews to see what people liked and also checking out their menu. There are a whack of Korean BBQ restaurants that have opened up next to the Ring Road at U of Waterloo. The Owl may or may not be the best option in the area but it is a well regarded chain. If we enjoy it then we have a good excuse to go out and try other Korean restaurants out. :)

Another one for Bibimbap, one of my favourites. Also, if you like cabbage Kimchi is fantastic.

No recommendations for a restaurant, most of the ones I frequent are Japanese but run by Koreans, with Korean food in the mix.

pork Bone soup and Bibimbap are my favourites in that order.

Found this place on Dundas and Spadina (414 Dundas St WToronto, ON M5T 1G6) which has the best Pro Bone soup comapare to the other 4 Korean restaurants i tried in that area.

Its $9 and im hooked. I go at least once a week and their most spicy one (77) is pretty hot so if you like picy food, youll love it.

I have been to a few Owl of Minerva locations in Toronto. I think they are good, and they seem authentic, but they are no-frills, high-turnover operations. To me, that is part of the fun. I really like the pork bone soup, it is a specialty there. It has been served spicy any time I have had it. I agree Kalbi Ribs are good, and BiBimBap, Beef Bulgogi too. I've seen people eating some kind of Korean seafood pizza, i've never tried that, but I want to. If there are Tempura dishes on the menu, I like those. And spicy seafood noodle soup

Avoid dog. Had it in Seoul and it was not pleasant.

Can you compare it to anything like chicken or beef? I'd always wondered why its so popular there
Maybe really bad beef?

I dunno. It was just bad. Maybe it was badly prepped, though.

For a second I thought this thread was gonna be a Korean BBQ thread. Went to one in Toronto and it was good and fun. You cook your own food on the bbq in the middle of the table and they give you the meat raw.

That sounds like my house. I hand my wife money and then I have to make the bbq for dinner. Why would I want to cook my own meat at a restaurant?
The only time I have eaten Korean bbq was last year at, of all places, Kleinberg Nursery. They were doing a fundraiser and were selling bbq pork basted in a lemon sauce served on a bun with sirracha (sp?). Hope they do it again this year.

Korean BBQ is quite good. First meal I had when I landed in Korea was Korean BBQ. I had never had it before then and the stuff they serve in Toronto is pretty much the same. Then again, it's hard to modify frying meat on a grill and wrapping it in lettuce and serving with some sides.

We're heading to the RCM sunday (beside the ROM). Any good Korean restaurants in that area recommended?

hey you're telling me. working in the restaurant industry for 6 years you think I'd hate the idea. I didn't mind it though.

to be fair the meat is really thin and it takes a minute or 2 to cook the beef and 3 to 4 to cook the chicken. I guess the pros of having to BBQ your own food is that it's super fresh and steaming hot. you also get to cook it to your desired doneness. but with the meat being paper thin that's either blue rare or medium well-well done

you are a gentleman and a scholar.

thank you

Galbi (beef ribs). I've yet to encounter anyone who doesn't instantly love it. If you're sharing dishes you could order Kampongi which is a sweet and spicy chicken dish that is more chinese style. Bulgogi is another favourite which is shredded beef that can come in a number of different preparations.

Owl of Minerva is not bad but it's a semi-fast food joint. It's a popular post-drinking location.
