Hi, I'm currently looking for a used commuter SUV for my wife. Any recommendations of used car dealerships that you had a great experience? Feel free to share your horror stories and who to avoid as well. Thanks.

I've gone to the dealers around the west end and in all honesty I haven't found the pricing to be THAT much lower than the used car section of an actual franchise store.

I'd recommend going to whoever you want to buy from, and at least that way you're more secure, and you can get the extended warranty from the manufacturer instead of some third party warranty....which to me isn't worth the paper it's written on as I seen them deny everything under the sun.

You can sometimes get a decent deal if you buy another manufacturer's car.
e.g. A ford at a chev dealer.

Aren't many of the extended warranties 3rd party anyways? Last few cages bought new, the extended offered was not from the manufacturer.

if you buy certified pre-owned from the manufacturer dealership, *most* qualify for an extended manufacturer warranty. A manufacturer warranty is the only one that matters, 3rd party ones are absolute crap.

That's cause the business manager makes a way bigger cut on the aftermarket warranties. They push what's most profitable for them.

I've had options of aftermarket v mfg warranties and always choose mfg.

Hi Mina, wish Johnny does used car sales too! :)

I'm looking for a reliable SUV (not too old - i think 2005 or newer) with somewhat low mileage (130-170k) around the $5000-6000 ballpark. Car maker not too fuzzy, wife likes Japanese, but I've convinced her with Ford (e.g. Escape XLT).

We had been looking at: 05-07 Mitsubishi Outlander, 05-06 Hyundai Santa Fe, 05-08 Ford Escape XLT, etc.

I don't know my way around cars, so kinda feeling uber skeptical with listings.

With your budget I suggest private sale... but bring someone that knows what to look for when looking at a car

FWIW, manufacturer dealers who sell used trade-in vehicles make a KILLING on those cars... in many cases, more money than they would on a new purchase. Maybe they have more wiggle room to haggle?

Small lots are all the same. I'd personally search autotrader for private sale..

I would recommend trying to find someone who can go to auctions directly and buy for you. If yourr financing i would stay away from small dealers who usually charge 30% + in interest

30%!?!? LoL ya sure. the highest I've ever seen at a private dealer is like 6-7%

I dont know i just bought a new car. I was looking at STI's where the interest from the dealer was 30 something. My friend also went to a different dealer and they charged 35% i think. Audi gave me 1.9% on 6 years. But i guess it depends on a bunch of things

i buy private if i buy used.

Your talking to the owner of that car, not some guy that just needs to sell it in 30 days.

Statefarm has good rates for used loans at like 6%, or banks.

I thought they were around 4.5%
It was a little while ago, though.

Bought a used civic last year. 1.9% if you get the extended warranty from Honda for $1000.....win win considering already used the warranty a few times.

In case you haven't figured it out, Mina works at a dealer and might be able to help you out

My current daily-driver econobox (which is not a Mazda) was bought on the used car lot of a new-car dealer (Brampton Mazda) because they just happened to have something that caught my eye at the time and at a decent price. That was 115,000 km ago, so I think I did okay. New-car dealers tend to keep the better vehicles for their own sales and send the really old or really high-mileage or trashed or dodgy-history ones to auction.

The price and age and mileage range that you are talking about are beyond what you are going to see as CPO (certified pre-owned).

Private sales have the potential for finding a better deal but also absolutely mean no warranty at that age, not even the crappy warranty that you might find at a used-car lot.

Thank you all. Lots of great tips. Me and wife went to see a few private sales tonight. The search continues!

I have bought several used cars over the years. One thing I always insist on is taking it to my mechanic. Costs me $100 or so but they always find something which I use to my advantage assuming that nothing major is amiss. With my wife's Yaris for instance the mechanic flagged the rear tires so even though we did not get much off of the asking price we did get two new rear tires installed in the deal.

Used car dealers are more lenient to you taking a car to your mechanic. Private sellers are not usually so open to that. I keep my cars for 4-6 years or more so having it checked out and knowing what will need attention in the coming months is worth paying a bit more buying from a used car lot.
