knee guard recommendations

Looking for knee guard recommendations. For daily commuting to work, under jeans. Should be low profile and easy to get on and off while pants are on :) And of course offers good protection.

Any suggestions?

Just picked up Dainese knee/shin guards and, after a 2.1k trip in 2.5 days (including 700k of fine WV twisties), am very pleased with them...

Very low profile look and while being very snug, allowed some ventilation through.

the forcefield stuff is good for impact but does not actually slide (the rubber is grippy).

IMO, any strap on knee armour is going to be difficult to remove without actually removing your pants.

I've used the Icon knee armour myself (under a pair of baggy jeans) and they are comfortable and work fine.

A friend of mine just strapped on a cheap pair ($30) of mountain biking knee pads over his jeans, and they worked just as well, even allowing him to get his knee down and scrape it along the road.

I figure whatever is comfortable and works for you is best. They all look like they will do the job as well as another.

edit: the Icon knee/shin guards appear to have been designed for people with toothpicks for legs. I had to get the strap lengths altered

Yeah, Forcefield is the manufacturer and T-Pro is a type of armour they make.

In regards to sliding, I was referring to the jeans, not the armour. If your armour is sliding directly on pavement, then your outer layer has not done its job.

It is possible to remove the strap-on knee armour if you have jeans on the loose side and reach your hand from the bottom of the pant leg. You might have to roll the jeans up slightly first, but it is doable.

Aerostich also makes a jean (Protekt?) with removable knee armor (you can pull it out from the side), also worth looking into.

I use the Knox knee armour - flex lite version . I use them under my Draggin jeans and find comfortable enough to walk in. I take them off once I get to work though. They will start to get uncomfortable after several hours of walking though. But you can easily take them off and put them on without having to take your pants off.

I also use the Knox knee armour (cross guard). Fit well under jeans, but starts to rub under knees during long rides (after ~2 hours), maybe worth to have some kind of underpants, not sure. Really wish I had them on when I lowsided last year :(.

I tried on 3-4 diff pairs of knee armour and ended up with Forcefield Limb Tube Knee Armour to go with the Forcefield Action Shorts (all from bluestreakracing.ca).

First I went with the Forcefield full pants first in a medium, they were hanging off me. I'm a 33-34 waist... 5'11" and haven't worn a 'small' anything since I was 13 years old haha. Bluestreak didn't have Small pants so I tried on the small shorts and large limb tubes for my knees...perrrrfect. The padding isn't 'low profile', but it is so comfortable (soft, not hard) you'd never know it was there with the right pair of overpants. I wear blue kevlar (knee, butt) reinforced jeans. Sure, I look like I have a big ***, but if I lowside etc. at least there'll be an *** there for folks to laugh at. =]

Whats the difference in coverage and wearability between forcefield limb tubes and forcefield strap on armor.

I just noticed the armor in the limb tubes can be removed. Is it just like the armor that they sell as inserts?

same coverage. strap ona are easier to wear. heck you can wear them outside your jeans if you want. can't do that with the tubes.

Where do you get these? Does Blue Streak carry them? I only see Knox gloves on their site.

Thanks.

I purchased mine from GP Bikes in Whitby. They had to order them . Came within a week.

You can also get them from Sportbiketrackgear.com. They have a good video review on them there also.

I use Forcefield knee tubes on every ride. They're comfortable, stay in place, and offer decent protection.
Purchased from Bluestreak.

Those looking at the Forcefield knee/elbow armour, you may want to check with Tony but I recall they used to make two levels of impact rating(70 joule? and 100 joule with 100 being the best) and I can't recall if that applied to both the replacement armour and limb tubes as well

I tried the Icon knee guards, but I found they didn't fit very snug. Sold them to a friend and he rides with them all the time.

Since then, I have bought the Knox Cross guard knee guards. They fit me really well and are comfortable to wear all day. I have removed the crappy knee pads that come in riding pants and wear the Knox ones under any riding pant I have.

Long thin knee sox when it's hot and any kind of long socks when it's cool - I use socks made of bamboo - even in hot weather they are cool

BEST SOCKS EVER October 25, 2011
Reviewer: Frederick S from Midwestern U.S.
First, a warning. The bamboo fabric is so smooth that on similar smooth surfaces such as a polished hardwood floor you can go skating. Likes: The socks are light, tough, extremely comfortable, and feel very clean. Moreover, they look good , somewhat like silk socks. One other thing. I discovered because of their smoothness,it allows my feet to slip easily into the boots. Usually, cotton socks snag while putting on boots, making it more difficult to slip into and out of above the ankle boots. Also, compared to their cotton equivalents, they stay up all day long.

Add in the Stryker armored shorts and you've got light and cool but effective armor.

Confused about the Knox Flex Lite. Is it a tube or a strap on? If it's a strap on, is there a strap above the knee? I don't want a knee guard that's going to flap about.
