kms per litre

I was wondering exactly how much savings I get with my kawi ninja in comparison to my pontiac vibe. I also wanted to see how good the fuel economy is on the r6 - so i crunched that one too. I researched everything via google & wikipedia, so it's just a rough number lol. Anyway, I calculated everything on 30,000 kms a year just for a reference point (i realize not many people ride that much and you don't usually ride your bike during the winter in canada).

Anyway - here's the results, I thought they were pretty impressive.

Pontiac Vibe - 12.76 kms per litre = $3,100 a year
Yamaha YZF R6 - 16.90 kms per litre = $2,350 a year
Kawi Ninja 250r - 20.41 kms per litre = $1,950 a year

If that's not another reason to add to the stack of reasons to drive a motorcycle I don't know what is.

I use www.fuelly.com to track my fuel consumption.

my sv does 4.5L/100km
and my 2.5L jetta does 8.8L/100km

Check the website out, you can also browse through all the other cars & motorcycles to see what the average consumption is.

If you tack on "as my only vehicle", sure. If you have to have a car, and the m/c is an alternate, the math doesn't work out because of ins/maint/etc.

It's one of the justifications you can use to the better half if they're iffy on it though. ;)

So ($Vibe - $Ninja) = $1150/year. You save $1150 per year in fuel, but pay for the bike's depreciation, it's maintenance, and insurance. How is this savings really?

Agreed! Now I just have to figure out how to get her to come out for a ride. She drives planes for a living but won't jump on a motorcycle... figure that one out?

Vibe also can accommodate 5 passengers compared 1 (2 is pushing it) for the Ninja 250.

I just calculate mine manually, getting about 5-5.5 L/100km on my SV. My last fill-up I got about 5.2 L/100km.

The asphalt is *much* farther away in a plane in a corner than on a bike. :D

Planes are the safest form of travel, bikes are not lol. Hell I live for riding but am scared crapless of roller coasters.

If your bike cannot fully replace your car year round so you don't need to own one (due to weather, distance traveled, number of passengers or whatever), there is no way you can save money at the end of the year by owning both a bike and a car. You buy the bike, you pay insurance for it, you maintain it, you buy all the gear and it saves you maaaybe 50% of what you'd pay for gas and car maintenance for the 4-5 months when you can actually ride that bike, given a good riding season (50%, as the bike doesn't drive for free, yet it takes half the gas it would take to do the same trip in a car).

Don't kid yourself. A bike is something you get because you enjoy it so much that you don't mind paying extra for it or have money to burn. You're not saving money by owning one. Ѕhit, I can give you one for free and you still won't save money at the end of the year. And the newer/sportier bike you have, and the younger you are, this money gap becomes wider.

I did roughly 13.09L \ 100km at Mosport with a 600cc bike :P

Do I win? lol

Bikes holds it's value much better then a car. You also have maintenance and insurance for autos. Bikes are cheaper, one of the reasons it's the most popular forms of transportation in the world.

You must drive the crap out of that Vibe to get such lousy mileage....
I used to have one, and would easily get 15 km/l mixed driving.
My bike, if driven nicely gets 16 km/l. Ridden enthusiastically gets 10 km/l average.
Ford Ranger (4 Cylinder) gets 9 km/l. Blech.

I ride 8 months a year and ttc the remaining 4. Don't own a car, that's what zipcar is for. I am definitely saving money compared to owning a car and driving it year round.

I use the GasCubby app on my Iphone.

Helps track all vehicles gas and maintenance.

My VFR avergaes 5.3l/100kms with a best of 4.7L/100kms
My Grand Am averages 10l/100kms with a best of 8.2L/100kms.
