Kinda a near miss today, what would you do?

To clarify, you don't have 3 lanes to choose from. You must turn from left lane to left lane, same rules on a right turn. Morons likethe 2 behind you "choose" from 3 lanes which is illegal and dangerous. What if there was someone turning right from oncoming traffic who also "chose" the middle lane? Now there is a 3 car pile-up, plus a bike and a pedestrian all because people don't know the rules for turning.

Thanks for the clarification. And they didn't choose from the 3 lanes, they went to the same left lane that I was heading towards, which is why I ended up beside one of them.

As i understand it as well in Toronto if you get caught in an intersection and the light switches you are up for a ticket period......

Only if you going straight through it, the exception is if you are turning and signaled your intention to turn prior to entering the intersection.

I see. I understood it as they took it wide. Since I've started riding I've been paying a lot more attention to cagers taking wide lefts and rights into the lane that is legally mine after a turn. I don't know if it's a lack of driver skill or people just being lazy.

Hm, I guess I'm hearing conflicting advice on this then.

I used to make lefts by keeping my bike barely over the line, waiting for cross traffic to clear enough to make the turn. Had an incident where a car decided to gun it through the red just as I decided to clear the intersection. I had barely started moving, so I grabbed the front brake, lost my footing, and slowly dropped the bike. The advice I got was to come out further into the intersection so that opposing traffic can see me better.
I agree that it's always better to be visible (most drivers do care if they hit you), but it's never enough. In the case above your issue may not have been visibility. My vehicle is fairly visible and I have almost been hit on a couple occassions by red-light runners that don't care that I have started my left. In those instances, the guy is usually banking on the fact that I'll stop and let him through...

For the record I stay straight and stop directly in front of the oncoming left turn lane. This allows myself to be visible to oncoming traffic while giving me the option to abort the turn and go straight if necessary. Other than that, the best advice I can give you is to get out of Toronto (which I know isn't feasible). For me, the horrible and selfish drivers are so bad that I'm afraid I'll lose my temper and do something stupid.

I don't think so - certain intersections are marked and if you are in it regardless of the "intention" - you are toast.

If you are in the intersection on red you get a ticket.

ust a quick heads up that the new Red Light Camera's are up and running.
Below are the intersections that have them installed. Take a look below for any intersections that may be on your path to or from work and take it easy.
If it takes a picture of your car in violation you could get a $190.00 fine in the mail. You may want to send this information to your friends, too.

sound familiar

Personally, I think red light cameras are a government cash grab. *The cities and municipalities will pull stats out of their arses to justify having them installed, since they'll get to keep the revenue generated. *To make the deal even sweeter for the province, cities and municipalities; They won't even have to pay for the cameras and equipment. *Its all on the feds.

A couple years ago I got a "red light" notice in the mail with a picture enclosed. *The picture showed me in the intersection making a left while the light was red. *What it didn't show was the pedestrian crossing in front of me. *I'm sure you've all met this pedestrian... the one who starts walking when the light is yellow then casually struts his stuff across the street like he owns it? *Yeah, that one.

I'm all for safer roads and if this will actually help, kudos to those involved... but sometimes you get burned... and it sucks.

I thought that pedestrians crossing an intersection with a center median but do not have sufficient time to cross the complete road must stop at the center median until the next light. But I cannot find the law to support this. Maybe there was a change in law?

Pedestrians crossing an intersection without a center median have right of way right through the intersection, no matter how slow they walk or what the traffic lights display.

Eglington/Don Mills used to be one of the most dangerous intersections in Toronto for multiple years running.

don't be throwing a temper tantrum because the person behind you is impatient...it's toronto, this happens more often than not, you learn after a bit not to stick around, learn not to hesitate so much...that interesection is a lot of lanes in every direction, not to be taken lightly...deal with the fool afterwards if you must, but get your butt through the intersection...as for pedestrians, you'll learn eventually to keep your eye on everything and everyone...but it happens, you lived...move along...

Routes generated for UPS trucks are designed to minimize left turns - reduces idling and risk of collisions, apparently.

That's why my deliveries are always late with UPS. They need to make left turns. I know that if they keep turning right they will get there as well, but it takes much longer.

Seriously though, why isn't there an advance light for every mid or major intersection. The amount of idling and people turning on red is directly affected by how difficult it is to turn left in this province. Retarded ....

I actually often do what the UPs trucks do, avoiding left turns unless there's an advance light ....

If I'm not misunderstanding your comment, I believe you only get ticket if you pass the white line after the light has turned red. The cameras snaps a pic i think a few seconds before the light turns red, and then another one shorty after. If you've already passed the white line and are in the intersection, you are OK (as far as the red light cam is concerned)

This. You're legally supposed to stay in the most left lane. Then change over after if needed. If you turn left into the 2nd or 3rd lane, I believe it is ticketable. They taught this back in driving school although I didn't know it was law. I heard people getting tickets for this recently.

Yes this is correct and I wish the cops would give out more tickets for it. Same goes for when people are making a right on a red without stopping first. They just turn right as though they have a green light, regardless of who's coming. I was at a friends place just standing out front. His street ends facing a park and there is a cross street there. It is a 3 way stop and the best stop I saw while standing there for 20 minutes was a 10km/h roll. No one actually came to a complete stop, despite being beside a park. I actually saw people accelerate through the stop sign. Glad I wasn't turning off his street at that time.
