Keynote speaker at the parent of the year confrence

disagree, you never know whats in those harddrives even after you clean them out :/

The guy's a IT professional... I'm pretty sure he knows how to clean a computer. Look up DBan.

I too thought it was a big waste to shoot the laptop. It could have been put to use somewhere. I would have sold it or at least donated it.... BUT. Admit it, shooting it was way more dramatic.

The problems in that family unit started years ago.I don't disagree with his actions completely. But his method will only fuel her 15 yr old "knows everything" mentality rage.I doubt that he and his daughter have much of a relationship other than her hand in his wallet.

What a waste of bullets... he should have used a BFG (that would have been just as effective) and donated those hollow points to some financially suffering gang. What a wasteful society we live in. /s

On a serious note, this parent is talking about the entitlement mentality of today's youth and instead we're focusing on what the father did with a laptop? Who gives a flying ****!!!

He is addressing one problem by aggravating another problem with our society - the throwaway mentality. We're too quick on throwing away good, useful items when there are people who could put them to good use.

The point is that he was tired of his daughters sassy and disrespectful attitude and he felt she needed and attitude adjustment. The laptop's status is not relevant IMHO.

I agree that she needed the attitude adjustment. Those of us with a higher level of social consciousness and a bit less uncharitable spirit, might have chosen a less wasteful method.

If you were talking about food, I may be inclined to agree but we're talking about a ****ing laptop... for all we know, it's usefullness was limited to facebook and twitter.

The other thing to consider is that dad wanted to make a point. He wanted to address disrespect and encourage other parents to 'put a foot in the ass'. If the video showed him dropping off the laptop to goodwill there wouldn't be 5 million hits on the video and we wouldn't be discussing it now. He was going for shock value to prove his point and this thread and the discussing within it proves that it worked.

I certainly see where you are coming from. We aren't talking about making sure the kids used clothing gets passed along to another growing child or the toys they have outgrown. We are talking about parenting, not charity or waste. He felt he needed to make a dramatic point and with all the discussion, that goal has been achieved. I am sure his daughter has learned something about actions and consequence.

1) And how much food could have been produced with the resources that went into producing that computer?

2) What's fb/twitter tool for a spoiled brat may be a useful study/research tool and a way to eventually get out of the ghetto for a good kid who just happened to be guilty of being born to poor parents.

As I already mentioned, some more deserving kid could have used it for studying and doing homework instead. The resources that go into making a laptop are greater than spinning a bit of cotton yarn in the neighboring textile factory.

Meh, we part ways on this point and that's ok.

Pretty sure the amount of "waste" generated by parents making examples of things they have bought their children is among the least significant amounts of waste on the planet.
