Keyboard oil change thread.

My keyboard has some issues. Some are designed in and they will not exist in my next one but I want to try before I buy. Another issue is sticky keys. It's a plastic to plastic sticky that has gotten increasingly worse. If it continues it'll be like typing on a sixty year old manual.

Is there a common spray lube that can be used or just get used to it? Silicone?

Love the thread title.

I would try electrical contact spray, but I'm no expert on these things

If it's a membrane switch keyboard, pulling all the keycaps out and giving them a bath in some kind of soap *might* improve things, maybe. A tiny little bit of silicone spray might help if you can get it on the stalks of the key caps.

I'm all for reducing e-waste and making what you have work, but I would personally not spend a lot of time on it and just buy a better keyboard.

My guess it is full of crud, dead skin cells, dandruff, food.... It happens to all of them over time, some faster than others.

As for a "lube" I would lean towards DeoxIT FaderLube.

Hopefully Staples will open a bit in a few weeks and I can do a test type. Anything oily or soapy scares me as it makes dust accumulation more likely. It feels like there is gauling but I don't want to take it apart while it still works somewhat annoyingly. I used to have a dry silicone spray but can't find it / don't remember the name. I don't want to spray at random without knowing what is wrong.

What kind of keyboard are you using?
Make/Model?

Why not get a nice Mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches?
Saves you the hassle and doesn't accumulate dust like a membrane keyboard would...

Personally using a G710+ I got cheap years ago with MX Brown switches. Keyboards these days are even better with the open designs that don't trap food and hair.

Wrong thread there sport

Where are the IBM Model M folks?
BEST KEYBOARD EVER
A friend told me she put her Model M in the dishwasher when it got dirty, about three times a year, for years.

There is a downside to them, they are loud. Louder than you think. Loud enough that one night in my apartment I noticed that the "echo" of my keyboard was my neighbour rapping their fingers on the wall in a typing-like cadence.

And of course not every computer comes with a PS/2 port on it anymore

Logitech K330. I burped it and it seems to have improved a bit. I'll wait until Staples re-opens.

We haven't been going or spending anywhere so a little upgrade won't hurt.

Since we're on the topic of mechanical keyboards...everyone's got their preferences, mine is:

It's stupidly expensive, but there's no competition for TKL, wireless, and RGB. I recently played a music game with it, which means timing is absolutely critical, and I had no issues hitting the notes on beat despite this keyboard being wireless. If you guys have ever tried playing music games with wireless headphones, you'll know just how bad latency can get.

The wireless TKL form factor becomes super useful for running and typing with something in your hand, and there's RGB! Gotta put that RGB everywhere. It also lasts 4-5 days without charging.

Only con is non-standard keycaps, so replacement keycaps are hard to find if you break them when removing to clean. Price is bad, but I've seen how much wired custom mech keyboards cost so meh lol

Razer chroma I believe. One of the few with a decent wrist rest. It actually attaches to the base keyboard with magnets, very handy.
The changing lights (that match the mouse, [deathadder]) are just bonus.

Since we're throwing out recommendations, I adore the Apple chiclet desktop keyboards, even on Windows (keys reprogrammed to be Windows correct). Been using different versions of the same idea for 10+ years.

FWIW I took it apart and sprayed it with silicone contact cleaner and it's good now. Putting it back together was tricky because the keys would have fallen out if I just tipped it over. Upside down the silicone mat wanted to droop all over the place so I used a piece of stiff paper to hold the keys in place as I inverted the top, then flipped it over for reassembly. I think I could of sprayed from the top but wasn't sure what was underneath and didn't want puddles of dirt and oil.
