Keeping my bike secure in an appartment building

I live in Mississauga in an apartment building and have come across more than one resident who's told me that his motorbike got stolen in our apartment building from the parking lot. I was wondering what sort of security/preventive measure can I take to reduce the chances of that happening (other than not buying a motorbike at all). I can have a security alarm but I'm not sure if it will help. The camera's showed that for one of the bikes which was stolen, some guys came in a van, lifted the bike up, put it in the Van, and easily took off.

Any suggestions?

Or buy an econoline van as your daily driver, and park the bike inside that.

I successfully lived in an apartment building for 2 years and a condo for a couple more and managed to survive a few attempts, other bikes were taken but not mine.

I had an alarm and I chained the bike with the biggest chain and lock I could find in Home Depot.

Not saying they wont take it, just saying that in 2 occasions they took every other bike that wasn't chained and left mine alone.

Mine was a newer model than other taken
 
Let me know where you're keeping it and I'll watch it 24/7.








Jk aside, I hear the best option is to have it not visible on top of all security precautions. Eg. Dinky cover, behind corners hidden, etc.
 
Pop it up on 1 wheel an wheel it into the elevator an up into ur condo/apt,

Or what I did was sink 2 6" anchors into a steal bracket into the concrete then buy a fat chain to go threw the bracket an threw the REAR tire,

As everyone else has said there is no sure way to prevent it just ways to detour thieves.
 
When I lived in apartments, I bought a very good motorcycle chain lock that was about 1" solid diameter and I put it through the swing Arm and around the post for the balconies. When my wife got a bike we used to chain the swing arms together. If they want it they'll get it. The point is to make it hard enough that they go looking for easier prey. The other thing that works really well is ride a bike that doesn't get stolen much. Most of the bikes stolen are chopped down and sold for parts. If you ride a bike that is reliable and doesn't get crashed a lot, they probably won't want that bike for parts.

Example: two bikes parked in a lot. An r6 and a bandit 600. Which one is going to get stolen? The r6 nine times out of ten. Not only is the r6 worth more, but there's a lot more of them getting crashed and guys fixing them up. Lots of guys looking for a deal on parts, especially body work. When I used to ride a Virago 1100cc, I never worried where I parked it. Even though it was in immaculate condition, the bike had been made for years with no changes and they were bulletproof. No one was looking for parts and I don't think I ever heard of one getting stolen. Same as my bandit now. I never worry it will get stolen.

Seriously though, I would buy a massive chain and go around a post or into the concrete somehow. As others have said, it's not going to guarantee anything, but the idea is to not be the low hanging fruit. The harder it is to steal, the more likely they'll move on to the next bike.
 
Store it at a friends? Bank on an insurance claim? Thieves will get it if they want it. Full stop. Lost my 8 month old GSX-R 600 in 2009 at a condo with "secure parking". 30 bikes in the area that month.
 
Seems like every time I read a "stolen" post on here it's for an ss bike and usually no more than five years old. Ride a naked bike, standard bike, sport touring bike, street sport bike and any cruiser other than a Harley and you'll probably be fine!
 
Im actually wondering the same thing. Im going to be storing my bike at my building in scarborough off of kingston road. Pretty sure anyone driving by would be able to see it which I feel might deter thieves. I feel like chaining it to the balcony posts every night would get amnoyong but obvs better than it being stolen. Might just park it between my car amd the wall. No way anyone can get to it there.

Edit. I have a hyosung....and its much better than any other 250 out there

Majority of condos will not allow you to drill into the concrete or asphalt - inquire before you try that.

The hyosung cover is actually kinda brilliant.
 
Chaining it to the balcony only took a minute and it made me feel safe about leaving it there. Best part was that the first floor balcony was about 5' off the ground so I would roll the bike right under it between the support beam and the wall, then put my bike cover over it. Basically doubled the weather protection and made it a pain in the ace for anyone wanting to steal it.
 
So what do you guys do on a normal day?

If your riding your bike to work or the the mall or something, how would you secure your bike than?

Just curious because Im thinking if I have to carry a chain and lock my bike every stop I make?

Usually middle of the day in a public place isn't the problem.

Underground parking or outside a condo late at night are the danger zones. Its scary how fast 2 or 3 guys can pick an entire bike up, put it in a cube van with stolen plates, and be on their way.

Hmm I see. So even on normal days if you ride to work, you would just park the bike and not use any type of way to secure it?

I dunno how people go about doing that. This is really my first season and Im not sure how to have my bike so it wont be lifted into a van lol
 
Nothing can stop them. Locks and alarms are just a waste of money, everything can be cut, and bystanders won't interfere. I use to park my bikes in the underground parking for almost 3 years now.
It ultimately depends on the bike you have. On the other hand if I had a SS or high end bike I would park in a self storage every night.

I wouldn't say a waste of money... They're a deterant. They don't stop, they discourage.
