just to be clear - no theft coverage if i don't have an alarm?

thought i'd ask the forum experts: my insurance company told me that in order to have theft coverage, i must have some kind of alarm system on the bike (she rattled off a big long list of approved alarms), does this sound right to you guys? not sure if its worth it to buy an alarm and get it installed which would probably cost $400-$500 for a bike that is probably worth less then $3,000 but does this just mean i'm SOL if it gets stolen or anything happens to it?

Seems simple like she explained no alarm Sol if stolen.

I believe TD you need an alarm for theft coverage, SF I dont believe you do.

I have an alarm on mine, The Gorilla 2-way is about $150 and should be less then an hour to install.

It is near impossible to give a rough guess on how many people have alarms. If I had to guess I would say somewhere between 1-99%

I have no idea but I'm with SF and believe I have theft. I'll have to double check.

Btw, if you want an alarm I've got a brand new one in my garage that belongs to my friend who wants to sell it. PM me if interested.

I have a Gorilla for sale. I'd sell it for $50. It was working before and collecting dust now. My bike came with it but I didn't like it and I'm of the belief if they want it they'll take it, so I pulled it out (gently of course). Everything should be there. I don't have the box or anything. There's a fob with it too. You could probably find the manual online I assume. Install looked basic from a reverse engineering perspective. Leads to the battery, sensors, mounting... easypeasy.

I'm with Jevco and have theft insurance and no alarm.

Might be interested to buy during summer.

Let me know, it's just sitting here. I haven't tried to sell it because it's not worth enough of my time to go through the hassle. I was hoping that suddenly one day somebody would want it, like today.

Might be interested to buy during summer.

I know TD/MM/Primmum require an alarm. not sure if SF does, my bike came with one installed

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that.

With TD:MM; I don't have an alarm (and claimed as much), but I do have theft under specific perils.

Really eh? I remember it being part of a family member's policy. Maybe it's just Primmum...gonna have to check and see

Could be. Perhaps bike specific? Mine's an 08 250, nothing special. I can see higher value, rare, or theft prone (read: super-sports :p) being on a required list. Just a guess.

Remember TD and TDMM are different iirc. I called TD for a quote the other day on my R6 and have to have an alarm or no theft

Yeah that would make sense, he has a CBR1kRRA, little more pricy to replace

Interesting...I thought MM/Primmum were subsidiaries of TD Insurance? Is TD a broker as well as a provider?

From the TD MM online quote

"Have you had an approved alarm system professionally installed? If you have a professionally-installed alarm system you should answer “Yes” to this question. Depending on the make, model and value of your motorcycle, the coverage and premium offered may be influenced by the installation of an alarm system.
When you speak to our insurance specialists, make sure to confirm that your alarm system meets our requirements."
