JT lifts travel restrictions

... that is for temporary foreign workers, overseas students registered to study in Canada and immigration applicants that have received landing certificates.
These, will be tested (no word on what kind of test) and will also have to undergo the (honor system) 14 day quarantine.
My take:
- Am not a fan of the TFW program except for the agri-sector that does not have labor to work the farms. Business's have used the program to outsource Canadian jobs for balance sheet benefit.
Movement of people expands the risk quotient of the spread of COVID-19. Test results can slip and quarantines are not always honored.
- Students?
Aren't schools and universities closed?
- Immigrants?
Can't their "must by" landing dates be given an extension?

IMO, the travel is not necessary during this time and Canada is being exposed to further risk.
But then again I have no political or governing expertise and brighter minds than mine have seen that these exemptions to the travel restrictions are essential to the well-being of Canadians.

I haven't seen that news Chris. Even if travel restrictions are officially lifted, most people aren't going anywhere far. Flights aren't officially grounded but not a lot are going. Especially international flights.

Some testing that was done 10 days ago is still not analyzed. With that much delay, you could easily get infected after the test and before the results. Also, testing still being severely limited due to supply/facility constraints. They haven't gotten through health care workers yet, TFW will be so far down the list, I would be surprised if they ever get swabbed (not saying that is right, just my opinion on what will happen).

In Ontario schools are closed. In BC, I think schools are open but no students are there (ie. teachers are showing up). Post-secondary is all over the map. Some are kicking students out of res, others are doing shelter in place. Neither option is great.

instead of allowing foreign workers in to do whatever jobs are necessary in these conditions, why not utilize those Canadian workers who are at home, deemed non-essential and in need of a pay cheque?

Because people won't do the jobs the TFW agriculture workers do.

Sadly, I've seen it first hand as I deliver to a lot of farms and have seen the farmers throw their hands up in the air over the issue. The farmers would LOVE to hire local people so that they didn't have to provide housing and all that. But they hire people and they quit in short order because the work is hard, boring, or too fast paced for them. Some people quit within hours. Some make it a few days.

Would that change now that there's so many people laid off? Doubt it. People would rather just sit at home collecting EI than do some of these jobs.

And definitely not for the amount they are paid.

There is also the social stigma to manual labour. I knew a store manager that was pumped because she was a "manager". She made a buck an hour above minimum wage. Another acquaintance was tight for money, working at the airport moving carts or something. Was offered a factory job paying a couple of bucks more per hour and turned it down because he didn't get a green badge.

Whatever happened to the dignity of labour. I'll shake anyone's hand.........................in a couple of months.

I miss doing jobs where you show up, bust your ass for the day and go home exhausted. Sadly though, you can make more money pushing paper than physical objects.

To be fair, the title is worth something.

Low rates or not. Please choose another time of day for your presser.
Every day this week he's been cuttin' into Hogan's Heroes at 11:30. Damnit.

It is compounded, while these agro jobs are heavily manual labour there is also a set of skills that need to be trained... (pruning , planting, etc.)

Locals don't have those skills, it is not rocket science and they could be easily trained in a few days, couple of weeks BUT they get trained and then quit, rinse and repeat.

Sadly our food security has a reliance on foreign workers.

Decades ago I did some preliminary work on an animal virus lab. Someone realized that if there was an outbreak of a disease Canadian meat sales would be at the mercy of countries that had labs. Those countries also sold meat internationally so help would be slow in coming.

Self sufficiency is at a serious risk.

There's so much hilarity in that show.
It's not often they contact London, but when they do, it's f'n priceless. The Brits all have a teacup & saucer in hand, pinky extended.
