Should still be able to do whatever you need to do even if it isn't a genuine copy until Windows detects it and throws it on your background saying so.

For the driver, just search for the correct driver on the manufacturer's website.\

If it isn't a genuine copy of Windows and it detected it already, Windows Update will not work which is typically what is used for an easy "plug and play" when automatically installing drivers.
Again, going to the manufacturer's website and installing the driver manually would be the best route to go.
 
Ok, my son said that he dl'd the drivers and he said that the computer cannot recoginize the printer because the printer is too old. Is this possible? School keeps emailing permission forms and I can't print out $#!+.

Possible but I'd be surprised. It's certified up to Vista.

HP seems to think it's supported by their universal print driver, so I would think it should work.

Colour Laser with 4 print cartridges? Our HP is ****ed for some reason. One of the new cartridges doesn't line up properly on the paper. Not good for what the cartridges cost, or Quality of HP. The disposable printer option might be the way to go.

HP M553X. It is overkill most of the time, but I needed something that could be used for work when required. It does a really nice job and I was sick of inkjets that plugged up and produced garbage unless you are printing daily. Flip this on, it's ready to go in a minute and it works every time.
 
may have to hit windows over the head to install it
after plugging into PC with power on
open device manager
look for a device not installed properly
will have a yellow exclamation mark next to it
may be listed as a printer
or unknown USB device
right click it
properties
update driver
have disk
navigate to where you saved the driver file
will be looking for a .inf file

worth a shot if PnP is not working

Gonna try this today.
Was gonna do it yesterday but kid has his pc password locked.....

When you go to update, there should be a choice where to look for it. Point it to the folder you downloaded it to.

Put up your 2 $80 cartridges on kijiji. Ask how to install the new printer here ONCE. When it runs out of ink, donate it to someplace that would appreciate a new printer. Instead of paying ~$40 for another ink cartridge (each, for black and colour) buy the SAME printer again for $30. You wont have to ask how to install it because you already did. Better still, if you are only out of black ink, keep the colour cartridge and put it in the new printer (don't open the new colour cartridge). Sooner or later you should end up with a few new colour cartridges and can then use that savings to buy a ~$40 black cartridge instead of a new printer. The new black cartridge should last about as long as the 3 or so colour cartridges. When you run out of one or the other again, donate the printer and start over again.

This procedure came from a Staples manager when I was shopping for ink cartridges.
 
Or you could just buy a $80 laser and never worry about it again

It SAYS that the drivers are updated.
It SHOWS the freaking printer
It STILL DOESN'T WORK!!!
I need a drink.
