I respect Jack's passion and commitment, and I wish him well in his fight. I genuinely hope he's back in the saddle by September.
I do, however, have one major concern that's nagging at the back of my mind. How much did he know about his illness during the election? He was asked a bunch of questions about the state of his health, after having fought prostate cancer and having had a hip replacement. He said he was fine, in fighting trim, and ready to be our new Prime Minister. Now, a few months later, after a large proportion of Liberal voters defected to the NDP at his request, he's no longer fit enough to lead the party? And he clearly isn't confident about being back in September, as they're appointing a new leader.
So now we've got majority Conservatives, a decimated Liberal party, many veteran Liberal MP's out of Parliament, replaced by novice NDP representatives, and likely a rookie MP leading the official opposition. This really isn't a great situation for the governance of Canada at this particular time on the world stage. Frankly, it's a bit of a mess.
I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is all on the up-and-up. But it does nag at the back of my mind. Did he know he was sick during the election, and chose not to say anything? A guy like him has pretty good medical attention. He's had cancer and recent surgery. I'm guessing not many weeks go by in between medical consultations. It bothers me that this seems to come as a surprise to him as well as to us....
