I can somehow understand that this race is historical, and dangerous (two dead so far this week).

But who makes a hot pitstop for fuel with guys wearing nothing but unzipped coveralls?
 
Mechanic is in hospital with face and hand burns.

I'm surprised they let fuel stops occur without proper fire protection.
 
They didn't have fire protection in 1907, why have it now? What's changed?
