Isle of Man TT - Have you been?

Yep, was blown away when you first see how fast these guys ride on normal bumpy roads with stone walls just feet away. Being British it was pretty easy to hop on the ferry and go over, in fact one of my friends who went every year liked it so much, he moved there and is now a race Marshall.

If that was in Ontario that would've been banned!

After riding the Cabot Trail, I propose Canada have their own Isle of Man, or maybe an Isle of Cape Breton. With 5-6hrs of twist and turns, elevation changes, and humps; thats enough to challenge any Isle of Man racer, lol

It didn't fly, the insurance/logistics nazi's went crazy and it was snuffed.

TT racers are nuts. 200kph passing houses, trees, poles. crash = death. how do these racers deal with that? is fatality high in IOM TT?

200km/h are the slower sections of the course

They are exceeding 200mph though Sulby

I believe the "UNOFFICIAL" top speed is 206mph.(331km/h for the metric kids)

Yeh, so I guess. There's too much nanny laws here. Its a really fun road tho, with all different challenges thrown at you, even fog, lol

I have more respect for these riders than MotoGP. Valentino or Lorenzo might be great, but they have gravel pits and a track built for safety to race on. Track is generally wider than that road course.

With IOM, its a raw road course, there are bumps, bridges, telephone poles, sidewalks sticking out of the road; speed wobbles at 100mph; remembering the road course so u don't get lost. All this going at 200mph, lol. That takes alot of skills! And you only get one chance to get it right, if u F it up, you're toast.

Guy Martin has a documentary/movie on this, I can't wait to watch it.
Guy's a friggin maniac!

For a racing event, it's high. Generally there is at least one fatality every year. If you add together the Manx GP and the Isle of Mann TT, then it becomes an average of about three every year.

I've always wanted to go. Anyone know if it's possible to rent a bike on the island and go for a spirited tour for a reasonable price?

From Wikipedia, "Between 1907 and 2009 (at the end of 2009 TT races period) there have been 231 deaths during official practices or races on the Snaefell Mountain Course". Something like this would never fly here. One death and people would want it banned for good. As it is, the danger of the Isle of Man TT is becoming less tolerable as speeds rise, and even its existence is being threatened.

There's something known as "Mad Sunday" which allows any member of the public to ride the course one way. I don't know if speed limits are imposed, but there have been many fatalities related to it

Mad Sunday is when the 37mile course is made 'one way' for the day so no risk of encountering oncoming traffic when taking the racing line. Couple that with no speed limits outide of town limits and that's how it got it's name. Through the week, most normally go in the race direction but it get's busy in the day with 20,000 or so bikes on the island, so one option is to go early, like 4am when it gets light, but not if you've been up drinking all night, like the two Americans I met when night, only to find next day they had done just done that and one didn't make it home.

It's really a fun week, with racing every other day and partying every night. Few things used to make me laugh, like pulling a wheelie is an instant fine for 'furious riding' and if you get caught with some weed, it's 9 days in jail, right next to the racetrack where you can hear it all going on!

That must be a work of someone with an Ontario blood in their veins. Can't believe that this would get passed by a local governing body ... LOL
