Is this hole in my tire too big to patch?

Leaving work today, find out my rear tire is flat. Here's a (blurry) picture:

The white thing is what's currently lodged into my tire. I'll need pliers to remove it, but does this look too big to patch permanently? What about temporarily patch? Never had to deal with this before

Edit: I meant plug, not patch

I have seen several this summer like that. Plugs were not recomended. But one guy did and hasn`t had a problem yet.
 
Ya sure you can plug it...might need 2 plugs. Go to Canada trash and get a kit or wherever plug it and fill tire. Good to go.
 
Turned out to be this piece of plastic that was practically engineered to pierce a tire, was like a tiny spear! Hole once it was out wasn't too bad and a coworker had a rope plug kit that we used to rasp and plug the hole with. Fill, spit check and it was good to go. Rode it home but avoided the highway.

My cousin believes that I could get it permanently fixed at a shop. Anyone ever had success with that? I have so much tread left it would be BS to have to replace it.

Edit: Also, lesson learned, will be getting a kit to keep under the seat.
 
Never had a plug fail. If tire is new...plug and play. Got cash to burn...buy a new tire. Don't have a ton of cash to burn but have some...take off tire and patch. Other than that just ride....keep a eye on it for a day or so.

He's got a spiffy way of changing them, breaks the bead on one side, takes it outside and pressure washes it out, then continues. I shot him a few extra $$ for his trouble :)

a proper patch plug is fine, may want to balance if you ride realy fast some times.

I got a nail 2 months ago and wanted to finish off the tire. used a cheap plug
have gone up to southwood twice since as well as daily driving every day (about 4-5k)
bike has also been at speeds above 245 a few times, no issues at all.
 
The best way to fix that hole would be an internal "T" plug.
Rosey Toes will do it pretty cheap.
He has done two for me, and they never failed, but I never felt secure with them in place.
 
I used the rope plugs as a permanent fix a few times. If it doesn't leak might as well leave it. If it does... put punch another one in(worked for me).
The thing is, a T plug that everyone recommends does not actually fix the structural damage on the cords and material that hold the tire together. If the tire is damaged enough to be predisposed to an explosion a T plug, rope plug, slime or anything else won't make a difference.

Also, I dont think tires explode in the middle anyways. It's always the sidewall, no?
 
Strange thing about plugs, I bought a plug kit once with 5 plugs included and put it in with the tool kit "just in case". Within 3 months I had used ALL 5 in my rear tyre. I threw the kit out and didnt buy any more... havent had a puncture since ... knock on wood. I used the tyre till it wore out (most of the mileage on the twisties) and didnt have any issues. The kit I had was different though, the plugs were rubber and looked like little arrow heads, not sure if you can get them here.

Ive never seen one of the mushroom ones that you install from the inside fail either.

Sry dude but that is terrible advice.
2 plugs in any tire is not safe, especially a bike tire.
If anything patch it from the inside, sure plugs work and may hold for the life of the tire but there not the best for tires.
But for gods sake don't use 2 plugs :(.
 
Install a plug/patch from the inside

Ropes or snake plugs fall out after time....Fine to get you home but not a permanent fix that can be trusted over time

Same here. After the plugs, never had a problem. I took the SV to highway speeds for a few hours (trips), top speeds, regular commute, etc. The tire wore off and was eventaully replaced, the plug never gave up.

Go see Rosey Toes...

Ask yourself if you would trust your tire at 120-150km/h or higher.. especially on a SS..

So 150 on a dual sport bike with a hole in the back tire is better than on an SS? :confused:

Isn't it highly recommended that you do not use that stuff on a motorcycle tire? I have seen motorcycle-specific products of the same type, though.

Good advice. And tire slime, I'd be surprised if it didn't throw off the balance.

To get you where you gotta go....why not?
Leave bike on side of road?
Pay to tow it? Or are you gonna pick him up?
I've used plugs quite a few times...truck tires, atv tires....and ya brand new motorcycle tire...zero failures.
"If" it did need 2 plugs...ya I'd be watching it and likely replace tire.
If your taking the tire off the rim....might as well replace the tire...patch is a patch.
