Is personal responsibility a completely dead concept in Canaderp?

No, we just hear about stupidity faster, from further, for longer.

Sometimes there's a fine line between personal responsibility and negligence.

That was a real mess. It sounds like the teacher meant well but just didn't think at all. I expect he will get convicted. A+ for effort to get the kids into nature. F for taking kids that can't swim, seeing them in the water without life jackets and not intervening.

I hope the fallout is when on a school trip, if within 20' of water everybody must wear a lifejacket. The alternative is no more school trips which is bad.

If you’re gonna take on responsibility such as other people’s kids, you need to check and double check every facet.

That I agree with, one mistake and many lives can be impacted.

Never load a Ramset with double purple shots.

"His family says he was not a good swimmer."

Broke out laughing - the sheer stupidity rather than personal responsibility is just too much.
What's next, try to sue the river or have it charged with manslaughter???

Darwin awards are still a thing in 2021, hopefully people at least become smarter once we start splicing baby embryos to have a positive IQ in the future, common sense & education though, god knows if we'll get that.
One can only hope.

I was going to arrange an informal white water rafting trip in the US one year for a bunch of people. I looked a bit further into it and the potential liabilities killed any idea of being an organizer for that. I didn’t have trust that everyone would accept their own responsibility for the trip.

A whole bunch of university organised events have been squashed for the same reasons. No one wants to risk a lawsuit landing on them.

Waiver?

Tragically, an 18 yo drowned in the Muskoka river on the weekend. His family says he was not a good swimmer. They were staying at Santa's Village. A life ring was on the dock and life jackets were available upon request. The family says Santa's Village should have posted a sign on the dock telling them of the dangers of the water. wtf. It's water. If you can't swim, it's bleeping dangerous. Everything about it is dangerous and unforgiving.

If you can't swim, either stay out of the water or wear something that can keep you up. If you can't swim, you can't go in a boat or use an inflatable toy/boat without wearing something that keeps you up. How many people this year floated out to water above their head, fell off and died? At least one in Wasaga plus a few more IIRC.

Police had to rescue three ladies that rented a canoe near Sibbald Point and decided to go canoeing for the first time without life jackets or the ability to swim and in a decent off-shore breeze. They panicked when they couldn't get back to shore. Luckily one was only half-panicked so she was able to call 911 to get them rescued (pretty funny call "we are in the water and can't swim", "which water, where are you?").

Sounds like a typical long weekend... City person drowns almost every long weekend up there. Most of them can't swim... but go swimming anyway. A lot of people don't realize a lot of those lakes aren't continuous gradual declines in the water... a lot of them are.. short decline.. to drop off.

most waivers aren’t worth the paper they are written on

A company I worked for had one to cover a warrantee issue. The wording was brutal and could still be challenged.

I asked a lawyer about one and the cost was a few hundred dollars to write the letter but ten thousand to research what was going into it.

The waiver would have to graphically list every possible injury and risk. I wouldn't even help arrange transportation.

More paper, easy to beat. Sadly, as with group rides, you are better posting your itinerary and if other people tag along, that is on them.

If you in any way limit the number of riders or other such CONTROL guess who gets pointed out when the wheels fall off.

That's a bit paranoid but it's not an impossibility. Nothing could be worse for a parent than to lose a child. Having to accept the blame as well would be crushing. I shouldn't have let him buy a bike, etc. I f a court finds someone else guilty then the parent can openly say it wasn't their fault, crawl into a hole.

Kids used to go to Pioneer camp for a few summers.
They had a tower with a giant air bag that would yeet you into the lake.
Everyone took a swimming test and got a wristband at the start of camp.
Never heard of any issues.
