Is my motor too hot?

Usually its like a quarter in up from the coldest but i went on a ride today and it was like this, and length and condition of the ride was same as always?

What's the bike ...

The temperature is still below the red zone, which is still OK.

If you are comparing how it is now (decently warm weather) compared to how it has been earlier this spring or last fall (cold weather) ... it's gonna run warmer now.

If it really is running warmer in the same traffic and outside temperature conditions, check coolant level in the radiator (it should be full to the brim under the radiator cap) and the reservoir (between lower and upper marks), make sure the radiator itself does not have too many fins that are broken or bent flat (blocking airflow) or clogged with dirt ... BE VERY CAREFUL if you decide to clean it or straighten fins, very easy to do a lot more damage. Make sure the cooling fan works.

Is it that high when you are riding the posted speeds(and in excess of) or just at startup and idle? If it's just idling I'd assume its normal especially because its still being broken in.

From a fellow KLR rider. Your fine. I'm guessing you saw that temp at a stop/slow speeds after constant running.

Buy the thermo-Bob if you want. I think your just adding potential complications. All the thermo bob does is hold engine temp at a more constant level. If you do get one I'd wait till after your warranty is up.

I have over 55k km (with a 685kit as well) and I've been fine without one. I know guys who had much more without and they were fine as well.

Take what is said on the KLR forums with a grain of salt. Some of those guys can be "extreme" in their views.

If the temp is always that high or more check to see if the fan runs and check your coolant level ( see manual for proper way). If those work you may just need to burp the coolant system as an air bubble can cause it to not work right.

I wouldn't worry about it.

AFAIK, Kawasakis of that vintage (the bike may be brand new, but the guts are still a design that is almost 30 years old) have analog temperature gauges that work in a small range, much like their annoying analog fuel gauges. I could watch the gauge on my ZX-11 sweep half the run of the needle just from the thermostat cycling open and closed. If you're still feeling uneasy about it, you can do the checks that Brian suggested.

Your bike is still breaking in. It will run hotter

Every word here is truth....thermo bob does nothing special at all. That temp will def go down as you ride and as it breaks in. Great bike BTW.

That gauge is there for a reason. The needle is 3/4 up and you guys think this is okay? It should not go more than half way under normal conditions, unless the OP was sitting in traffic with an outside temp of 30C+.

check owner's manual. what is that mark between hot and cold supposed to indicate?

Sorry thats not a mark its a piece of grass

No, that's a mark. Your needle is pointing almost directly at it... The grass is on the other side.

from the owners manual:

This gauge shows the temperature of coolant. Ordinarily, the needle should stay within the white zone. If the needle reaches the “H” line, stop the engine and check the coolant level in the re-serve tank after the engine cools down.

That mark is not on my '08 temp gauge (i don't have MPH on my speedo either).

If I had to hazard a guess, that is the level at which the fan kicks on. I could be wrong.

If your fan is constantly running I'd be concerned.

Tat2 and I sat through a Montreal traffic jam a few years ago, and that was the only time I was concerned about my engine temp.

Let us know if it doesn't improve.

Mine does the opposite? Saw it at half once, when it was idling for quite awhile. After riding for 30ish minutes, it's at ~1/4.

See thats why its usually at 1/4 so thats why i didnt get it, i guess it was a little bit warmer out not much and i drove for 2 hours straight through city.
