Is it necessary to be mean to succeed at work?

Sorry but blah blah blah do YOUR job and do it well. You shouldn't need someone to point out your mistakes and if we do I may not be in enough of a happy corporate rah rah mood to mollycoddle you and use acceptable language

Ffs we are adults, accept criticism where it is due.

I'm not here to mom you to death so do your damn work and I'm not gonna ask please. You are paid for this

You clearly didn't read the opening post, the multitude of examples from posters here, or the Reddit link with ample examples of this topic's subject. Are you ******* stupid? Can you not read? English isn't my first language so wtf is your excuse? Mina managed to get this by simply reading the TL;DR on the first post. Seriously, the ****'s wrong with your brain?

versus

I believe you are attacking the wrong topic as this isn't about pointing out mistakes. It's about being unable to ask for clarification on systems with no documentation without getting attacked due to personality traits, and how to navigate this.

Do you see what I am highlighting?

I don't disagree, but sometimes the "mistakes" are from a lack of training and/or understanding and may not even be realised by the person making them. A responsible manager, manages. Therefore it is a requirement to point out the incorrect action while not belittling the person.
If this is a difficult task for a manager/boss then they should not be in their position.

Being respectful to everyone you work with is a basic requirement. People who complain about not having to "babysit" are usually the ones that require it..

why the hell does everybody want a label and a syndrome ? More than likely it’s a self fulfilling prophecy that you are fitting into a diagnosis because you want to fit into it and then you start acting like the diagnosis because you want to believe it.
I’m an Aries so I can do XYZ....I’m so quirky lol.

I agree. A lot of these things people take the good and say ‘yup, that’s me!’ And the bad as ‘I can’t help it, I’m XYZ not my fault!’

LOL, I am an Aries , and I can tell you , that part where they say "aries, he knows two types of people , those that understand him , and those unworthy of his time"
Uhh , YUP!

Honestly I think my comment applies to both. Maybe you’re special and different....but then you’re in the minority.

70% (or whatever it is) of people think other drivers are the problem....

That's because most people have fickle egos and are not confrontational. We have enough data now to quantify a lot of things.

Want to know if you're a good driver/rider? Hit a race track and check your time. Even a sim rig is sufficient.

Want to know if you're smart? Take an IQ test.

Want to know how strong you are? Check the records and standards online.

Think your salary and networth are high? Go check the national avgs.

Want to understand your soft skill weakness and strengths? Go take an MBTI test.

I know the above is not a common approach and probably scares most people, but it does enable ones ego to transform into confidence instead (or depression lol)

Your post makes you sound abrasive. I would also point out that criticism doesn't have to be insulting.

Problem resolution is easier when all parties look for the solution. Bad attitudes are counter productive.

The mom bit: Pussy footing around is bad attitude as well unless you're dealing with a four year old or person with mental disabilities. One calmly points out the problem and asks for an explanation. If there were extenuating circumstances they are considered. If the excuse was a hangover then further discussion is needed to point out the consequences of not showing up fit to work.

Don't get emotionally involved. If appropriate you listen to get the gist of their problems but they don't cry on your shoulder and they don't get hugs. If your company has social resources point them to HR.

If the person just doesn't give a damn you point out the de-hiring process and say This is the first step.

If you're dealing with my B-I-L who knows everything and expects to be CEO tomorrow so shouldn't have to be doing menial tasks today you might helpfully point out that a resignation looks better on a resume than being fired.

Holy **** boys. Suck it up if you are not doing your job well. I'm gonna call ya on it cause I am doing mine. As far as management then if you give out the hits then expect them back. Just make sure what you say, you mean.

No, not stupid and can read, just all grown up now whatever the **** your name ○●•□■|\ is

Good grief I am abrasive and proud of it.

Mean what you say and say what you mean.

I'll take that beer (or 2, not a pussy...)

Flame on!

Key words: Mean, Succeed

I don't think it is being mean to ask for the correct change when you buy something or to have your order corrected if they brought you salmon instead of steak.

A guy brings you three spark plugs to do a tune up on an inline four. You point out the missing plug and he says "Just make it work."

"OK. What cylinder do you want to misfire?" isn't being mean.

Success is self defined but it's hard to feel fulfilled for an "A" player when everyone else is dropping the ball or the coach's only input is "Try harder" suggesting you aren't already doing your best.

Some occupations are whore's markets. Sell or produce by price and delivery and there are hundreds of competitors. I got out of a few of those because the negative calls outweighed the positive. Some people have more tolerance.

To me, being appreciated is success. I don't need flowery speeches just don't make it sound like you're doing me a favour by hiring me and I should be happy with table scraps.

Be ruthless.

Peons do the job IF we wanted that management job we would apply for it and possibly get it

For management to succeed then they need workers.

I work in power generation. I have to do my job well and ought to be smacked if make a mistake as lives are on the line.

I will admit I maybe I wouldn't tell a library job dude to smarten the **** up, mishelving a book shouldn't hurt anyone.

Ok, maybe I wouldn't tell a library dude to smarten the **** up, mishelving a book really shouldn't hurt anyone(but their feelings)

I work in pharmacy. If I don't engineer **** right, people die due to broken communication, missed dosages, and absolute chaos between doctors, nurses, and care givers. So if I ask someone a question, I expect a ******* dignified response so I can do my job right.

And I am very ******* good at my job or I wouldn't be ignoring recruiters on a weekly basis for 3 years now.

You still don't know wtf we're talking about btw lol. You're turning this into some kind of low IQ testosterone dick measuring contest and missing the point.

Also, don't take anything I say personally. You said you can take it, and I need an outlet because I'm not going to speak the way I do here to my senior devs as I need their information lol

Now I feel bad for applying for a higher role within 5 months of starting....

Nothing wrong with that imo. If you know you're capable, go for it. I got a 200% pay hike at a coop years ago because they wanted me to stay instead of going back to school. If you know what you are doing, flaunt it, people will appreciate it.

Ohh I know exactly what I'm talking about.

As a boss you have to be boss. Prob why those headhunters did not pursue you. Oh yeah, you ignored them....good job kiddo!

I'm out of here, enjoy this convo on what "ought" vs what "has" to be.

TARAH

Lolol! Ya ok, if I worked with you and if any of your posts in this thread are a demostration of your management style, or even your personality at work, I would tell you the F-off within the first week. Seriously you are a joke.

Every time I did a MB test, I'd come out in a different box.

It's been static for me across multiple tests and many years lol

Perhaps I'm the anomaly.
