This is the saddest thing I've read in ages. Although I don't have a dog, I plan on getting one in the next few years. So this outcome just made me sad and angry.
What I really can't understand about this old man is that he has a black lab?! The guy owns a dog himself! How can he go around shooting other people's dogs?! If I was your brother, I would seriously consider shooting his dog too...but...when it actually came around to doing it, and looking at that dog in the face, I wouldn't be able to. There has to be some way to make this old fool feel the same pain your brother's kids are feeling. This dude is off the charts batshit insane.
