International license needed for Florida

I listen to the radio ... I don't find things on the internet that they said on the radio. You'll find it yourself faster than I ever could ... (not a tech geek)

link on that 680 news update?

The Toronto Sun was claiming, on Friday, that the law had been repealed. This is patently untrue. What is true is that the Florida Department of Public Safety, which oversees the Florida Highway Patrol, was saying that the State Police would not be enforcing this law and were 'recommending' that other police agencies not enforce it also. Several of the larger city police forces have stated that they will not be enforcing it, obviously due to the potential tourism impact.

As of Friday CAA was giving refunds to people who felt that they had erred in getting the international permit, but they were still advising that people get it prior to traveling to Florida. This IS still a valid law on the books, in Florida.

There was a blurb on the news today about insurance companies possibly not covering an incident as " essentially if your driving in a location where your un -licensed , your not covered".

check with your carrier if your going south.

680 News was also saying last week that the Insurance Bureau of Canada was recommending to its members (insurance companies) that they not base whether to cover a claim on whether the driver had the international permit.

I don't think the IBC can tell its members to ignore a law in black and white. I don't think the Florida Department of Public Safety can tell its members (the police) to ignore a law, either.

Rob is right in that this won't be completely and unquestionably sorted out until the Florida legislature actually revokes the law. Rob is right in that if you want to take absolutely no risk of being charged with this or having an issue with your insurance company that the only solution is to follow the written law and get the international permit.

But in view of what everyone (insurance, police, state gov't in Florida) is saying about this ... I wouldn't.

So Budget(Car rental) just called and said that you do not need an International Drivers Lisence... they said something about not needing it until June/July

They called because I had inquired with them about the law and if I needed it really or not. At the time of making the rental arrangement(A week ago) they did recommend that I did get one....

So I eventually did not end up getting one, My friend has one though who got it last week. So hopefully all this talk about claims will help since one of us has one and we're going to be taking turns driving anyways....

What is recommended for people that are already down in Florida and got there nearly 2 months before this came into effect?

The Florida House of Representatives has passed a bill to repeal this law. It now gets passed on to the Senate for ratification after which, assuming it passes, it will go to The Governor to be signed.
